Possible torn bicep need some opinions
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:11:02 PM »
Was bowling in my summer PBA experience league last monday when late in the set I though I had pulled my bicep by muscling the ball too much. Finished the last game gingerly and then let it rest for a couple of days then practiced again on Thursday. Threw a few shots and in practice felt the same pain, figured it was the muscle not healed from the pull and stopped bowling. Tried again this past Monday and after practice was feeling fine. 9th frame first game left a 6 pin and felt a little twinge, similar to the last week, shot the spare and felt a slight pop. Painful yes, falling over crying no. Decided to go easy and bowl the last 3 games (great idea on my part) and now my arm after 3 days still hurts and is bruising on my bicep, looks like I got hit with a baseball. Talked to a few people today and everybody is saying I either strained something really bad or tore my bicep.

Has anybody seen/dealt with this? If so (or any doctors on this site), what is the best guess based on the description given above as to what happened (strain, pull, tear) and how long does it generally take to heal? I can still do most activities with little to no pain and can swing a golf club with no issues (played Wednesday and again tomorrow). I guess I am concerned with am I going to be able to bowl anytime soon and if not how long until I can. I am going to the doctor on Monday, but would like to get opinions beforehand.

Thanks,
The injured Laner

I have just found any injury anymore hit up the doctor before it gets worse, it could even be tendinitis or a small strain, its just to hard to tell.

Go to your doctor as soon as you can and get a MRI of your forarm and bicept .The longer you wait the worse it gets and if its torn the bicept will shrink and stop working. This happend to me and waitied to  long 4months and had to be in a cast for 6wks but i did get full recovery GET IT CHEEKED AS  SOON AS POSSIBLE

A coworker of mine tore the tendons attached to the bicep region after trying to pick up a 60lb box needing to be disposed of.

His bicep area is very bruised like it was hit with a baseball as you mention.  Needless to say he needs surgery to have the tendons reattached.

Like they and you said, see the doctor and get it taken care off.

I've done it twice, the pain starts at the elbow and goes up the bicep right? Feels like a rip? Yea It's not a good feeling. It took me about 4 to 5 weeks to heal completely.

I remember the second time I did it, I hurt it the 3rd frame of the first game, and actually finished the game and the second before calling it quits, couldn't even lift my bag into the truck at the end of the night...Not a smart move on my part.

Just take a few weeks and try not to strain the arm too much.

The bruising would indicate that you tore "something". Whether it is just a partial tear of the muscle or not would and should be determind by a orthopedic physician. Typically if it is a complete rupture of the tendons you will have a hard "ball" in your biceps from the muscle pulling up. Call a MD.

Go to the Doctor!!!! The only doctor on BR.com is Sawbones and he is retired and lives in OK which does you no good. Besides, he does not do on-line diagnoses.

Hope you have medical insurance, you might need it!

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the replies. I went to the doctor this morning and having an MRI tomorrow. As the asst called it "yeah theres a defect in there". MIght not be as bad for the doctor said I was able to have some good mvoement with little pain so hopefully it is only a partial tear at worst. Will hopefully know tomorrow or Tuesday during a follow up. NO more bowling for me for a few weeks for sure though regardless.
