Possibly Dropping Ball Weight
« on: January 28, 2012, 02:12:25 PM »
I currently throw 16, but have been having wrist and finger pain.  it hurt to make a fist and bend my fingers back a bit and it hurts as the night goes on to lift the ball on release and eventually get to like17mph and slower, and by then the ball just over hooks due to my lagging for power.
Went to the docs to get checked out and are awaiting X-rays and what not.  Was considering moving down to 15lb but i think that might not be enough and am seriously considering a move to 14lb equipment.

My question is, is there a massive difference in hitting power by dropping 2lbs instead of 1?  My rev rate has never  been recorded but i would have to guess im in the 350-400 rpm rate and throw 18-19 mph's.  Any suggestions, or input would help.

I had to drop down to 14lb's due to an injury.  It takes time to get used to throwing a lighter ball but most equipment 14lb's or more have the same dynamic cores in them.  If you also look at the numbers from 14-16lb's, the 14lb's seem to have stronger numbers.  After rehab, I tried to go back up to 15lb's but after awhile I had to drop back down.  Your rev rate possibly would increase at first with throwing something lighter especially with going down to 2lb's in rate.  Mine did increase and I went down only 1lb.  Also, you may have to use more surface based on your speed.  You don't want to be throwing through the breakpoint.  With the technology these days, you don't need anything more than 14lb's IMHO.

Thank you for you input.  Im just hoping its nothing that requires surgery.  I'm 26 and have been throwing 16lbs since i was 12.  Im just afraid that if i go to 14lbs, im gonna throw it through the roof...lol!  I just dont have the money to buy a 14 even used just to try and see wat happens, then if its to light go buy a 15.  If i make a jump im sticking with it until i cant bowl no more.  But I guess I just have to wait and see wat the doc says.   I might even go with a 15lb to start the night and a 14 to finish it if i have to.  I have  NIB 15lb Tropical heat I won in a tourney.

I too had to drop from 16 then to 15 and now 14, all from wrist problems (surgeries). I too was worried about how I was going to adjust to the lower wt#. But in fact, since I've went to 14 the honor scores came a commin.

Never had any honor scores til 2006 ( been bowling since I was 9, I'm now 45). But have 6-300's and 3-800's since the drop to 14. The wrist feels a hell of alot better. And I think the pin carry is alot better.

In my opinion, just go with a light 15. After drilling the ball will be a heavy 14 anyways. After possible balance holes or switch grips you would be at a heavy-mid 13 if you started at a 14lbs ball. I made that mistake on a couple balls

I have a similar injury that's been lingering for a few years because I went from working a physical job to typing on a computer all day. Tried 16lbs and I quickly ended that. So during that time I've moved down from 15lbs to light 14lbs. and to me it feels so much better when my wrist is not stress with the pain of using a higher weight. Hitting power and rev rate for me feels alittle better with 14lbs but sometimes I can get a habit of throwing too hard, expecially on longer oil patterns. I use to practice like 30 games a week but now I barely get 8 games of practice a week because of the wrist injury. If you have to cut down on practice (which I hate to do) abit and do some light exercises to strengthen up your wrist and hand, it does wonders.

I just started using 14lbs and I have to say it has been a very good idea.  I lost alot of weight, about 50lbs and right now the 15lb ball just doesn't feel right.  My bowling has been up and down.  Since going to the 14lb ball I am right around my usual 225-230 average.  In about a week and a half I had more 700 series in that time than I did all season before the switch.

The pin carry is better with the 14s and the ball speed comes more natural.   It's still a work in progress to get the timing right.  some nights we feel good,  and bad other days.

If you can accept the fact that sometimes you will get a screwy 14lb hit on a bad shot, than there is no reason not to go to a 14lb ball.   There are many shots where I said no way, and it carried the pins well enough to strike as well.

Entry angle knocks down pins, not the total weight of the ball. (Total weight helps with some of those off hits that obviously were not your best shots).  Make good shots and you strike, make so so shots and you still sometimes strike, made bad shots and you don't strike that often.   Some places because of factors like the pins/kickbacks etc your going to have to use your head a bit more and make better ball and release choices when those off hits that would of carried with a heavier ball do not.

For instance the other night I started off with a couple of 220 and 230 games and then hit a stretch where I left 4 10 pins in a row, and 6 for the game (low 200 game).   Increased my side roll to get a little more entry angle and finished with 238.   I was getting half 10s in the flat gutter that normally would always bounce out enough with a 15 or 16lb ball at this center.  Instead of being rewarded for so so shots, I had to make an adjustment and make better shots.

I appreciate every ones input.  Doc should call sometime this week.  But I have decided to go with 15lbs and gradually move down in weight if need be.  Like one poster said he made a mistake on some balls jumping right to 14 and I cant afford to make that as well.  So again, thank you all who gave me some insight on what to expect.  Will fill in results if anyone is interested on the outcome.

I didn't have an injury, but as I was just using it for spares, decided to drop down to 14 from 15. I noticed a substantial increase in speed. It has given me the idea of perhaps going to a lighter ball if I wanted to go with one of the stronger hooking balls. I currently use a 15lb Tropical Storm and it hooks mighty plenty for me.

I dropped to 14 pounds around the start of the winter league season and I couldn't be happier.  Initially I was leaving a lot of 7 pins and 10 pins but then realized I was playing the lanes like I was still using a 15 pound ball.

The lighter ball gave me the ability to control and increase my speed allowing me to play straighter angles to the pocket.  Now I am averaging 200 on the 3 leagues I bowl on.

I can also use more aggressive equipment too.  I picked up 3 used balls from my pro shop guy.  Hammer Arson, Storm Tropical Heat, Track 300C and Hammer Blue Urethane.

I use whatever ball works for me.
