Just getting back into the sport...Need Help!
« on: February 05, 2005, 01:02:37 PM »
Hello, I am getting back into the sport after about an 8 year highetis(Spelling).  I was a 190 - 200 average bowler in High School, and basically throw a sweeping shot, standing right of center and hitting somewhere from the 3rd arrow out.

I am using the ball I was throwing in HS, which is a Champions "The Ultimate Weapon" and a "Burgandy Hammer.  I still like the Hammer, but the Champion is very worn in the track.  It probably has better than a 1000 games on it.

My questions are as follows:
1.  What is the latest technology?  I used to know all this stuff.  My knowledge base stopped around the time the Quantum came out.  I think by Brunswick.

2.  This is a tough one to answer, but what ball would you recomend at this time?  I would be looking for a ball rated for maximum reaction.

3.  I am really looking for any general advice on products and technology.

Thanks

I would recommend a mid-performance ball especially if you are bowling on house conditions. Forget maximum reaction. Forget all the technology stuff for now & work on your game. It will pay off more than technology. Then look into the high performance balls on the market.

Are you looking to just bowl league or are you also looking at tournaments?  Based on the fact that house shots haven't changed much over the five-years since I returned, and in listening to comments from others I am guessing that there wasn't much change between 1997 and 2000, the argument can be made that the two balls listed by Makojoe will still get the job done.  The only real reason to buy something new is if the need exists to build an arsenal for tournaments.

If its a THS he could probably throw plastic and get to the pocket if he has a descent game. I hope he doesn't get caught up in technology instead of skill.

Thanks for your replies.  I have the balck Ultimate Weapon.  My biggest concern with purchasing a new ball, is the power.  I throw low revs with  medium speed, and the two balls have now still hit the pocket like a ton of bricks.  I guess another question I have is striking power.  Are there any balls I should avoid?  I remember when I bought a teal pro rhino back in the day when it was the next "Best Thing", I hated the ball.  It did not drive through the pocket.
