Bevel
« on: August 21, 2004, 08:03:00 PM »
I've always used a little bit of bevel on my thumb hole... but recently I went to almost no bevel. And I hang in every ball!

Doesn't matter if the thumb hole is loose enough to where I could put 7 pieces of tape in the thumb hole... I still hang and I top every other ball!

I'm going back to beveling my thumb holes! With bevel, I get out so cleanly!

Thoughts??? Anybody else agree???

I too do not use bevel on top of the slug. I used to hang some, but after I found the correct F/R/ and Lateral thumb pitches, I never hang any more plus I was able to reduce thumb hole size 1/16. Thumb is now tight enough that it rubs lightly on the sides and it still doesn't hang up.....Go back to 8-8-04 in the Drilling column and copy LuckyLefty's experimental test instructions and use them. That's what I did, and Volia, problem solved.

Is there that big of a difference of bevel or no bevel when it comes to your game?  because I have good bevel on my ball so that it can be comfortable and not cut up my thumb, I can't throw a ball with no bevel for more than 1 game.  So my question is........ If you are already comfortable with the way your ball feels with its bevel, why would you switch to no or little bevel?

bevel applies pitch... if taken out of the front it applys more reverse. However bevel is necessary for many like myself who cannot completely insert the thumb because of a large knuckle at the base. (The thumb should be inserted completely into the thumb hole too the crease at the base of the thumb) Since I must bevel the entire top of the hole to seat my thumb completely into the thumbhole, I add additional forward pitch to compensate for the additional reverse I will be adding during beveling. Without the thumb inserted correctly many many bad habits can and most likely will develop.

Bevel as stated is based on several factors.

Very often the amount of nerves contained under the thumb and where they are positioned has a lot to do with it! ie if one has a fleshy area between thumb and index finger they often need more bevel than a person who does not have a fleshy area!  (ie non fleshy area means nerves are closer to the hand).

Also for the same person one can throw a ball with theoretically 1/8 reverse with very little bevel but this same person if they try 1/8 forward will if bevel is left the same will end of with a dangerous ongoing pain under the thumb, unless bevel is added to compensate for the now more forward pitch.

Bevel and the need for it is an individual trait and is also needed in different amounts for each pitch that you use.  Change your pitch and you will often have to adjust bevel.  I've written a piece called "What MoPinel taught me about bevel in these forums it may help".

It is referenced in drilling in the piece "Is there one place to go..."

The one nice thing about "no bevel" for me is every ball now feels the same.
Because of the oval thumb sleeves I use.If I start having release problems now its caused by a wornout thumb sleeve and I replace it. That cures my release problems.
free agency it is until i get a better offer.   LMAO
