Blood/Bruise under fingernail
« on: September 28, 2004, 02:33:26 PM »
I bought a used ball which had a span of 4 3/8" vs. my span of 4 - 4 1/4".  I had the ball plugged and redrilled without grips at its original 4 3/8" span as I liked the feel.  I bowled with it last week wrapping my fingers with tape to try and keep the fingers from getting sore, but found I could barely get my fingers into the holes of my spare ball, which has grips.  So now, long story short, I have a bruise/blood blister under my middle fingernail.  I can't imagine the slight lengthening of the span caused this...has anyone else had this problem?

Nollster - Were the finger holes drilled with more forward pitch than you've been using?  Or are the holes smaller?  --  JohnP

I wanted a little more forward pitch, but it doesn't really feel like it.  The new holes actually feel looser than my grips do....

The span is too long.

You are forcing the back of your fingers into the back of the finger holes. Plus without grips there is nothing to soften the blow and the additional forward pitch in the fingers is doing the same thing.

With your thumb fully inserted and laying your fingers over the holes (don’t stretch) the first knuckle crease should go 1/3 to ½ the way across the finger holes.

Hey Nollster,

It can be either of what John P and PinBuster mentioned.  Just remember also that if it has more forward pitch "plus" a longer span, your hand is actually being stretched a little more than just the 1/8 of an inch diff. in span.  The additional forward causes you to reach over and under the finger holes causing even more of a reach.

My cousin had the same problem and his span wasn't even long, it was very relaxed.  I had to change the fingers from 1/8 forward to 3/8 reverse to help the blood blister/bruise go away.  Hope this helps some...

Rick -

Before I got this ball, I had a problem with my ring finger where a ridge migrated its way up the nail until I could clip it off.  I thought maybe my inserts were too big, so I switched to smaller ones.  After that, the ridge problem seems to have gone away; however, I noticed a spot on my middle fingernail that looked stressed -- like it was being jammed into the insert too tightly.  I hate bugging my proshop because they've been real good to me, but it seems something is just off.  How do you guys decide what pitches to use, at least initially?

Hate to beat a dead horse but the span on that finger is too long.

Hey Nollster,

On the average, I usually give my customers a standard of 1/8 forward in the fingers for lift and adjust from there to either increase or decrease for personal feel(some guys use 0).  Laterals are set at 3/8 and 1/2 in opposite directions, true parallel impression is supposed to be 7/16left - 7/16right per Bill Taylor.

Not sure if your release is in any way close to my cousins' but I'll describe it for you.  He has quite a bit of hand rotation, almost 80 degrees.  His thumb is also still in the ball as his hand rotates around it, if his wrist gives a little, his fingers will clip the ball on the way out.  This is how he was getting his friction.  I learned from a couple of other customers that the other thing I found consistent in seeing this bruise was if their wrist gave out at the point of release causing the ball to fall mainly on the fingers and if the fingers bent back, it created the friction from there.  When I got them to stay under the ball a touch longer with their wrist, the friction went away per their response.

With this understanding, I also started increasing reverse pitch in the fingers to angle the finger in the weak wristed position so there was no longer any conflict.

If you have a good shop like you say you do, I'd recommend to go back and talk to them.  I always welcome any of my customers with their questions or problems if something doesn't feel right.  I can't tell you what you feel and not everyone can be the same, so that's why I'll try and adjust and tweak feels to individuals as needed for comfort.  Hope this helps...

Rich -
Had the spans checked before league yesterday and they checked out OK.  Said the ring finger might be a little long, but that wouldn't affect my middle finger.  I'm thinking is was the tight grip on my spare due to the tape on my fingers.  Bowled with the ball last night sans tape and there was no additional bruising, so I think the mystery is solved.  I think I'll have him stop by to see me roll this ball -- I think the slightly longer span helps the ball sit in my hand a little better which seems to help me support it better.  Regardless, I just like the feel of it more -- I just hate to have to plug/redrill to get all my balls to fill this way!!

Hey Nollster,

I hear ya.  Only tough part with feel I've learned is that it also changes.  I've personally gone thru this before where I have a ball I use for a few months, then one day I pick it up and it just doesn't "feel" good just sitting in my hand.  Nothing's changed, tape is the same, ball felt fine, worked fine but all of a sudden, it just doesn't feel good in my hands....can't explain it.
Well, glad to hear there was no additional bruising...good luck to you.
