Power vs. Fluffing ........
« on: June 30, 2003, 12:30:35 AM »
.....does it really matter ??  I know, I know, this is a Bones-esque post, however, after seeing another post on the PWBA board re: the finals yesterday being a Fluff-fest...(that's funny isn't it !) anyhow, I decided to post this .

Maybe it's because I'm not a cranker, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm at the point now to be able to enjoy watching professionals regardless of their preferred style.  Sure, it's fun watching Michelle Feldman and Robert Smith, and Mike DeVaney, etc, etc,...however, because they're not cranking it makes it not as interesting to watch them execute shots ???  I don't think so ......

It doesn't matter to me anymore....I like watching changes, lines, adjustments, etc, etc.........cranker or fluffer....

your thoughts??

I remember hearing the same thing, just before the "gomer" whacked the field with 65 in a row...

I am far from a cranker. I rev the ball more than a tweener though, but my ball speed usually allows me to play straighter.
I like watching both styles. With that said, I prefer to watch the women bowl more than the men (men are usually more entertaining, the women are great shot makers). I like watching the women because the men are all about power (atleast most of them are). Just like in tennis, the women can hits the shots more accurately but the men blow the ball by you at 145mph.

In the end, it is not how the ball gets there, but how many of the pins that fall. The post that jeff was talking about had the person also saying how the pins fall for CDB, but when some of the other women are blowing the racks and getting tapped. What that tells me, is if she is winning, or leads the tournament then she is the one playing the correct line because the pins are falling. Hitting hard is not always the best way to go about it.

Good points, but it's like watching the women bowl.  CDB may be good, but she doesn't impress me at all.  Most of her shots just carry, that's simply it.  Over half her shots are mixers or carried 10's.  She makes at least 2 bad shots a game, and you can tell because the ball tilts 45 degrees or more and has less than nothing on it.  I'm not trying to slam her or anything, she's a pro, and I'm not.  Obviously she works hard, and is better than nearly every other female out there.  It's kind of hard to find a female bowler with a solid game though.  Kelly Kulick is the first that comes to mind, Leanne Barrette, Dede Davidson, and Lisa Bishop are others that I'm thinking of.  Michelle Feldman is awesome, but most of the time it's straight cranking and blowing the pins around.  CDB carries her way through most things, Marianne Dirupo's almost painful combination of side roll, axis tilt, and speed is just a recipe for flat hits and 10 pins.  Maybe I'm not analyzing this very well, but you do have to see that many of the women have flawed games, and I'm talking about everything past the foul line.  Their insistancy at hooking plastic at 10 pins is what causes them to miss, not the "oil in the middle of a SPORT pattern."

With reactive balls that let you puck it down the lane and throw messengers everywhere, straighter is greater...just ask Walter Ray Williams.

This is a "retarded thread".

Scoring is the key.

Not how many boards they cover.
Not how many rev's they have.
Not how many messingers they bring.

And you have to tip your hat to anyone who best the field with any style.

The fact that CDB carries alot is just a false statement. I am not a huge fan of her, but I respect what she has done.

Anyways, once a bowler reaches a certain level in my opinion the reach a point where they almost create their own carry. Your 160-180 average bowlers carry some garbage, but it is going to happen for anyone. But when a bowler keeps hitting the same area and the pins usually fall in the same manner, they are playing that line intentionally therefore if they realize the carry is better there and no one else plays that line, then they are the smart ones.

I think Pinbuster nailed it, and that's basically what I meant in my retarded roundabout way.  And as far as CDB's carry, I have more power and she still carries better.  I don't have Robert Smith beat the pocket to death power, I'm kinda right at a happy medium.  Lol, Saw King.  Hey "faget," a 13 year old can spell better than you.  And he uses Buzzsaws, he's already smarter than you'll ever be.  And I've led sport shot tournaments before against college bowlers, but my favorite one was on a 27 foot pattern at KU that I made match play in.  Wow, come to think of it, I NEVER missed match play in the traveling youth tour against the college bowlers.  Couple from WSU, couple from KU, couple from CMSU . . .

I think that Ragnaar will agree, that the EXPERT to ask on fluffing would be Pchee2, or better yet maybe his cousin 4x removed; "Clump"!

Thanks LT. I'm surprised you did that, and see you got blasted along with me. I don't understand, I want 50 ft. of heavy oil, with more in the middle, and "everybody" thinks it'll be an easy shot. It'll be easy alright, but only for the "few", VERY GOOD bowlers. =:^D

I think that's another angle of what people are hitting on.  If you can find a way to score no matter what, do it.
