practice balls
« on: March 26, 2010, 03:04:09 AM »
Wondering if you guys use older balls to practice with.  I hate to wear out my new stuff for practice, and I like to practice alot.  Ws wondering if it is bad for my game because I have to bowl a little different with the new equipment.  The older stuff has lost alot if its reaction.  So what I am asking is for me to get better should I be using the equipment I bowl with in leagues and tournaments when I am practicing?

I mostly use old stuff to practice with
for a few reasons
they are not as forgiving as the new equipment
and I dont like to wear out my new stuff with just practice time anyway

nothing wrong with it at all

I use my new stuff on a few different sport patterns so I get a good idea of how they read the lanes and react
then they go back in the bag till I need them

It depends on what I'm working on actually.

If I'm working on approach, release or timing, I use old stuff that I don't bowl with anymore.

If I'm trying different lines, I will use the older stuff until I get the shot somewhat close, then use the current lineup to test for best reaction.

I use my new stuff,

IMO it makes no sense to practice with gear you won't be using when you bowl in leagues or tourney. Whats the sense of practicng at all? your look will totally different with different gear.

I do this as well.  When you work on timing, pushaway, etc the ball reaction isn't as important.  IMO.  When I get new equipment I practice with it against some of my other stuff so changing balls when needed is easier.

I use all my equipment right now for all my practices but it will change as of this upcoming season. I am getting all new equipment this year and I will use my old stuff for practice. Usally summer is my practice sessions so I will work on a few things that didn't do well this year and I will use my old stuff when I do it.

I tend to practice with my plastic ball focusing on shot making.

I originally bought my power groove for practice. The house I practice the most in had old wood lanes that tracked the balls badly. I take other stuff with me but 85-90 percent of my practice games are with my "practice ball". Quality of execution and repetitions are what I'm looking for in practice. Strikes and scores are irrelevant.

is ur old balls drilled exactly as ur newer stuff? if not, then dont bother using them, it will affect ur game greatly

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

I'll practice what I use.makes no sense to me to practice with plastic and use a hooking ball unless you practice on toast and play on a flood.

For me, I will usually use different balls for practice than what I would use for league.  I am usually working on some part of my game or working on certain spares, so I am not trying to throw strikes so using older ones makes sense.  Better for me if I have to throw two shots per frame, sometimes first ball is at one of the corner pins, that way I get more for my money (ok, I am cheap).

Old stuff for me unless it's a brand new ball that I need to test.

As many alluded to, practice can be used for many purposes.
1. Is to understand how all the balls in your arsenal relate to each other.
2. Is to affect muscle memory, i.e., practicing feel, repeating shots, spares, etc.

For #1, you need to actually use your current equipment.
For #2, I would use an older piece of equipment you are comfortable with.  If it has a different feel than your current lineup, i.e., different weight, spans or pitches, it will not be of much good.

There is generally a limited useful life of any ball, especially the higher end equipment, I tend to practice very little with those. I have an old Ebonite V2 that I like to use for practice, but when I don't carry it, I will simply alternate my arsenal every handful of frames.

I usually dont even take new equipment for league. Who needs the latest and greatest for a house shot.

Invest in equipment that lasts.  Lanemasters and Visionary.  If you can't get 500 games on those balls, you're doing something wrong.
