Favor Tournament Balls
« on: March 02, 2005, 02:02:55 AM »
As the ball world continues to charge more money for more hook.  What are the bowls you rely on when the condition doesn't let you bounce it off the gutter.  Balls that you would use on an US open pattern, at Nationals, on a sports shot.  Preferred layouts!  What do you do when you have to be accurate with not only you shot, but you speed too!

I am going to see what kind of response I get before I post what I would use and layouts.  What

Drill patterns and surface more related to pattern you will encounter. I personally love the V2 sanded for all tough shots. I have a few drilled differently that go every where.  Lower flare balls will also keep you out of trouble on some harder shots and sport patterns. Balls  like the Razor Wire and Stinger Low- flare particle didn't get great sales but i would be willing to bet most regional and tour players have one in their bag (Mika-300 at Windsor Locks on TV last year).
Your statements are too broad brush as depending on style and pattern what i use is not what a cranker will use. In todays enviroment you have to do a bit of homework to be competitive as not every ball or drill will work, as many new variables have been added to the game. When days of urethane and limited variables (core type, diff, limited covers) were around it was more about the player and less about the equipment. Today it is still about the player but the right equipment choice can give you a greater edge. Technology has brought good and bad traits. There is no one set of balls that is the say all but series like the V2's, X factors and Inferno's do stick out as you see more people even over time still using them.

If they are on the drier side, I like my Blue Hot Flame.  Mild cover and low differential keep it in play for a long time.  Surprisingly, my last sport shot tournament, I used a Silver Streak Pearl for nearly all 10 games.  It allowed me to move in more than usual, but still have enough backend to carry the 10.  I saw a lot of people throwing better balls than me ringing 10's all day trying to cover too many boards.  Also had recent success while throwing Ron C's Super Charge in an 8 game long pattern.  It wasn't sport compliant, but it was pretty flat.
