Practice-Revalation?
« on: December 18, 2003, 07:15:06 AM »
So me and Mrs Revs go out to toss a few at the request of Mrs Revs....she's be taking a lesson or two and wants to practice a bit....hmm? Good for me! Let's go.....

So , down to the closest house we go (where king of the mill works), we get ready to start and out of the pro shop closing up comes King. I tell him were just throwing a few and he stands behind me and says, "so , if your practicing , want to try something ?"  "Sure" I say, .....he says...."let's start moving that track a little lower, I can show you what's going on"....

Well come to find out, because no one has really watched me to see what I do...I have an "early thumb" which causes my high track! In other words, I want to 'rotate' too soon.....so I really concentrate on what I'm doing, which, LIKE IN GOLF (hi Bones!) when you do something right, it doesn't feel right ? Ya know.....because you've been doing it wrong for so long...

Well, at release, it felt like I had the ball hanging off my fingers and off to the right side of my thumb, but when in actuality, I was hitting it properly!

"THERE !!" King says........"there!"......I heard him say as the ball goes down the lane and just makes a beautiful move to the pocket and shatters the rack!

My eyes go big as saucers...holy bajeeezuz belt !  My ball comes back, King picks it up, and nods w/ this nice gentle smile.....sure enough....my track is off my fingers and dropped down where it's supposed to be!!  I threw a couple more games with Mrs Revs in the 2 teens and twenties and watched my track the whole time .....it's still good !

Thanks King....I think I'm on to something nice here !  A proper release, strong and better revving....

Funny how when you've been doing something for so long one way, then you do it right and it feels so weird, and then .....AHHH HAAAAHH !!!  That's it !!

My high track was due to an "early thumb" King says, ...."thumb timing".....

Can't wait to throw some more !!!!!!!

Oh yeah......Mrs. Revs did well tonight too !!

Congrats Revs.

Question for you Revs. How far away from your thumb and finger holes did your track move?

The reason I'm asking is how my track looks. I think it is "slightly" inverted.
My track is about 3 inches from my finger holes and about 2 inches from my thumb.

What does this say about how I release the ball? Anyone?

Berreez,  thanks

Well, because it IS new.....about an inch or so immediately! I as about 1/2 inch or so from my thumb and the first couple track lines hit my middle finger. Didn't really affect the ball movement that much but it was clipping the middle pretty good........

Well, I'm about 1 1/2 inches off the thumb and about an inch off the fingers now !!  My bowtie is really high too, much higher than it was.........

Closer to your fingers than thumb ?? I don't know ...sorry........

Mojo, thanks !
remember when we went to Tbowl last week and you mentioned something about how it looked like I was releasing the ball.............YOU WERE RIGHT !!  I rotate my thumb 'left' or 'over' too soon and when I pull thru it, it creates a really high track ...too high!

I obviously didn't throw enough games for it to feel 'normal' yet, but I'm really getting the hang of it ...

It feels like when I'm coming down thru w/ my backswing and let's say I'm on lane 10, it feels like my thumb is pointing at lane 40 !  It's not, but if FEELS that way because of early thumb timing before....wierd !

And......what a reaction too....I can deliver a MUCH stronger ball,..hey, maybe I can play deep !

Now, you may just see how strong that Hercules really is once you finally get it down pat!

Jeff, its a great feeling, seeing the power you get at the pins isnt it?
To me it just goes to show that everyone can benifit from a coach with a great eye as King must have to spot what he did.
My coach had me doing the same thing a while ago and boy am I benifitting now.

Well, Bones, thank you! Much appreciated! Younger, I guess compared to you? Yes, but I certainly don't feel younger as I peer into my 38th year !

Thanks again...it's a nice feeling!

Jeff,

(Well, you knnew this 2 cents was coming, didn't you?)

Zero, I'm glad you were able to learn a new technique so quickly and easily. It is not an easy thing to do. Ron seems like a good coach and teacher as well as a great driller.

First, get rid of the idea, as expressed in your own writing above, that you were throwing the ball wrong, with your higher track. You were not. Yes, with resins, in general, a medium track is more all-purpose than a high track or a low track. But there are more than a few times when a high track is very useful.

Second, are you able to switch between the two release at will?

May I make a suggestion?
It is a very normal human reaction to dwell on the new "thing" so muc as to lose the old "thing", especially in bowling. I assume i am still human and have gone that route too many times. My suggestion to keep practicng a lot now to insure you can easily go back and forth between the old release and the new one.

Oh, and be careful where you put pins on your newly drilled balls, as placement below the bridge may limit you to your new release.

Congrats!

yes charlest, I was anxiously awaiting your response!!

Yes I can switch between the two, the high track release has been going on for a looooooong time !

The problem I have with my high inverted track is that I clip my middle finger a bit on the first 2 revolutions....not NECESSARILY bad, but.....

But yes, I agree, I want to  be able to go back and forth....but for the time being, I need to work on keep my thumb timing proper...

thanks again!

Thanks, Bones and Jeff.

Bones, what is heaven's name are you trying to do - Make this a thinking man's game?? I am agog and aghast.

Jeff,
I've been doing similar things lately. I usually throw blocks of 4 games on random days between leagues, just to keep a sense of timing. With changes, I find 8 - 10 games barely adequate.

Bones, you are being far too subtle. Most of whom I want to smack upside the head with a 2x4 and ask them, "what were you thinking when you did/said that?", but I far too much of a gentleman to do that, except in my dreams.

Update: 12/22

I was able to do it again at practice today at lunch!  Still a high track, but off my fingers and rotating like it should !  Still feels wierd, but it's right, and I'm happy.

Now I just have to learn how to 'hit-it' differently / less for different releases, but still have good thumb timing........

More later...........just dropping a line
