Title: Practicing spares
Post by: Scolai on July 07, 2003, 09:10:35 AM
Any suggestions on ways to practice spare shooting?  I did a little math on some practice games I threw today.  I bowled an 8 game block at +76 with a bunch of opens mixed in.  Had I converted my spares my score for the 8 games would have been +239.  163 pins is a lot to throw away on a bunch of whiffed corners and easy spare attempts gone awry.

So, how do you practice spare shooting?  Any drills or routines you would be willing to share?

Thanks.

Either way probably works.  Some people try to leave junk for themselves to pick up.  Others throw at corner pins and hope they jump around a lot and leave stuff like the 1-5-8-10.  Doesn't matter what pins you're throwing at, the key is accuracy, then you'll be able to pick nearly anything up.  Another thing is simple targeting.  See where you're standing, and then line up the pin with whatever arrow the ball will be crossing, and where you're going to be laying it down.  I usually lay it down around 34 for 10 pins, and it crosses around 4th arrow in a straight line.  So if you know you lay it down at 34, just throw it at 4th arrow, and it'll automatically pick up the 10.  It's a lot easier when your target is closer.

The only difference between youth and adult leagues are that the big boys are allowed to whine.  They're more entertaining anyway.

Hamster, or if you can see the targets.  I find my spare shooting usually improves after I get a new pair of glasses.    You mean there are lines between the arrows?

Try shooting the spares that give you the most trouble on the first ball. Then shoot the rest. That way you get 2quality shots per frame and better practice for your money. Good luck...

Shoot at the 10 pin till you hit it. Count each attempt.
Then shoot at the 6 till you hit it.
Then the 3
then the head pin
then the 2 pin
then the 4 pin
then the 7 pin

A perfect score for this drill is 7.

From the Ritger Camp. One of the many "little" things I picked up from the "basic" program.

I like that Mumzie!

I was thinking about doing an ARROWS game ?

Shoot at each arrow with your spare ball! helping you out for shooting 'straight' at spares.....
