Prices-How high can they go and people be willing to spend it?
« on: December 09, 2021, 03:21:53 PM »
Been watching prices for the last few years. I know that life is expensive, and things naturally increase in cost, but just wondered how high they can go and still have enough people willing to spend the bucks to get “the good stuff”.

If they went up like everything else, they’d probably already be $300-$400 bucks (I gave $130 for a Black Hammer in 1984, lol), but they haven’t.

When they do, are you in, or are you out?

They are steadily going up as you see the new Storm Nova is retailing online at almost $190. I remember when the high end stuff was $169-179. Its just a matter of time. Thank god I drill my own stuff or you can add 60-80 on top of that for drilling, some places by me charge $100 to drill a ball.

I remember when the original Quantum’s were released in 1994. They were super expensive compared to anything else back in the day. Plenty of folks said I will never pay that for a ball. 27 years later here we are.

The Quantums in the 90s went for $299 retail and they didnt have a hard time selling.  The rising cost of balls now are more due to the stupid inflation that has the costs of everything rising.  The thing is, league bowlers can get away with being competitive with mid performance stuff (see GB4, and Rubicons).  The only people that really need the high end stuff are the ones that are pretty speed dominate.  With this increase in inflation; you could very well see sales on the high end side go down and instead have bowlers focusing on balls like the Burners, the Hypeds, Rubicons, and other balls in that mid performance price point.  Had we continued to have the economy we had from before the pandemic; I dont think the cost of a high end ball would make much difference in ball sales.  However, with the cost of everything going up; we could very well see ball sales in those higher price points go down until our federal government wakes up and makes some decisions to stop this insane inflation.

$130 in 1984 for a ball that a good pro shop probably paid in the $57-59 range and a really good shop paid in the $53 range.  Now if you try to keystone a ball that wholesales for $150 people think you are trying to eat steak every night.

Mid-1970s: Brunswick LTDs, AMF Dick Weber 5-Stars, Ebonite Gyros, Manhattan Rubber Pro-Makers were all going for $35 or so retail. Columbia 300's, Brunswick, AMF and Ebonite mid-tier balls were going for $30 and less. Brunswick came out with the 8583 at $50 retail. I remember the consternation that caused: Even with the 8583's cloth snugger bag included.  ;D

Inflation goes up at an average of 2-3% per year. That means in 20 years, something that cost $100 initially will cost $180.

If you go back to itsallaboutme's example of $130 in 1984, that would/should cost $388 in 2021. Now add in the fact that bowling balls in the 70s/80s were practically thrown together compared to the amount of CAD work and engineering that goes into today's cores and coverstocks -- and basically we're still getting stuff at a bargain right now compared to what it should be.

To answer the original question, I drill my own stuff. I have paid $150 three times in the last calendar year (RST X-1, UC3, IronForge) but usually I get stuff on closeout or a couple of years old, or I find something with very low games that I can plug/redrill and have the plugwork in a spot where the ball doesn't roll over it after redrilling. I'll continue to get a top-of-the-line ball at least once a year regardless of cost but hunt for bargains otherwise.

$150 is as high as I will go. Period!

My older stuff works just as good as this so-called new technology stuff! In many instances it works better.

I still own quite a few Brunswick Zones from the 90's. I'm here to tell you, those balls with Powercoil 18 cover stocks are virtually indestructible! I have not had 1 ball crack, and its now 2021!

They can increase prices but I won't be biting. That's just my take.

Prices will continue to rise for all of the "new technology" that they keep selling. Since cores and covers haven't changed in decades and many of the cores have been around for years that cost is minimal.

It's easy enough to wait and buy stuff when it's discontinued.

First night of league I used a 3D Offset I got off eBay that is very well used. Had to start off playing waaay deeper then expected with 1997 technology.  I'm sure the next Offset I buy will hook even more. For the majority of bowlers they are using stuff to strong for what they see and could save $$$ and score better using less.

I remember Lane #1 getting high in price with their bowling balls. They come out with the Difference and Difference Hybrid with a price tag of $350 a ball.

People are already paying the higher prices. See plenty of overseas or discontinued bowling balls listed for $300 (and sometimes even higher) that get sold. Similar deal with the domestic releases; the "serious" bowlers gotta have their favorite company's new stuff; preferably on or as close to WWRD as possible.

I refuse to be a willing participant in the rising cost of bowling (although I remain a participant in the sport, if you can still call it a sport). The number of league bowlers continues to decline and the response from the bowling industry seems to be to suck as much money as possible out of the bowlers that are left.

Yeah, makes one wondering how they (Lane 1) are doing presently?  ::)

As long as people continue to buy every new ball that is released and continue to pay the prices, the manufacturers will keep doing what they are doing.  Recycle and shuffle core and cover combinations, change the color and names, and sell it as the next best thing.

Urethane is hot?  Mark 'em up!

Supply is constrained due to material and/or labor shortages?  Mark 'em up!

Regardless of the economics of supply and demand, the bowling ball market is the biggest scam going.  My current go to ball is going on 6 years old and is just as effective as it was when it was new.  I have a few undrilled balls stashed away that were all bought on closeout.  The newest of those is 2 years old.  I won't need to buy anything new for quite some time.

The manufacturers need to stop with the constant new releases.  A couple a year is fine, but any more than that is just overkill.

Hp balls will hit $200 by 2024-2025.

I still find deals for $100 or less. I typically don't care about the newest ball...

Just paid £205 ($271) for a Purple Hammer (drilled)and was shocked at the price of a third tier ball. How much would an Obsession have cost?

Ordered it months ago and never asked the price before I went down to collect but I was shocked.

Would I have bought it knowing the price? Probably as it’s my one a year ball but it will be my last if thats how prices are going.
