you're actually comfortable with your ball? Granted, different cores have various effects on a ball, but how often do you change the coverstock before you decide the ball simply doesn't work for you? How many balls do you own where the drill layout is the same/similar to one another?

If you have a ball (in NIB condition) that simply hooks too much, instead of altering the cover, why not use a different ball suited for the conditions you're on? I guess what I'm getting at is this, there's an enormous amount of different balls covering various lane conditions, why are we always taking a ball meant (by manufacturers specs) for heavy oil and turning it into something suited for medium oil lanes?

Another question.....

If you had the option of creating your own ball, what combination of core and cover would you use?

I'm sorta old school. I've often read in this forum how people alter the covers on their equipment. I am yet to try it (other than keeping stuff clean). Heck, the last time I changed a cover was with my urethane equipment (i.e. polishing and/or resurfacing).

I like this topic, very thought provoking question.

With the exception of my oiler and dirt balls, I will try numerous surface preps to determine the reaction I like best. I try to setup the surface to handle and react the way I want it to on THS. When I head to tournaments, I usually change the surface some. It just depends.

I have found some balls work better dull for me than polished. I have also found that even with the same ball, different drills warrant different surface prep.

Example:

I've had 3 werewolfs

1. CG axis, pin under bridge--dull-hit like a wet fart, high gloss awesome
2. pin above bridge, cg palm--dull-hit okay, even reaction, high gloss was better
3. pin under ring, cg kicked out--1000 grit dull works best.

You never know what the best reaction for you is unless you fool around with the coverstock.

Guess I'm a FOOL .. but I never change the surface of a bowling ball!

It bothers me when a manufacturer suggests in his sales brochures that the SURFACE CAN BE CHANGED! My thoughts are that the manufacturer tested the ball and found .. what he thought .. was the best surface .. what a fool I WOULD BE to alter it!

It also bothers me when a manufacturer does not state what condition the ball is best used on .. suggesting it is VERSATILE is a PHONEY SALES GIMMICK! If you can't get it to work right on any condition then you (the bowler) must be doing something wrong!

Not all houses match the pattern the ball was designed for optimal use on. Drier house will require some polish, and vice versa. Also it depends on what kind of line you are playing. Play more in the dry, and you'll want a more polished ball. Play deeper inside and you might need it duller to fight off the flood.

By altering the cover, you can take one ball and make it do a lot of different things. Only time I find a new ball is when you polish it and it still to agressive, or dull it and still to weak. Then the ball is saved for work on other house conditions.

I've moved to an area where it is often dryer than other places I've lived.

I have therefore often taken balls that were NIB and used finer paper than what the manufacturer used and then often added polished.

This saves a day of going to the center and saying "jeez, that hooks too early".

I've now converted some recently unusable balls from worthless to really nice in these dryer home houses I now go to.
