Interesting article on Columbia300's website
« on: November 11, 2003, 06:52:47 PM »
There is new tech doc (posted last month) on Columbia300's website. It appears to be a Design of Experiments, encompassing several of the variables bowlers have to deal with.

As someone who is always trying to understand which ball to buy, based on manufacturer's specs - this information is helpful.

What grabbed my attention was the large impact the axis of rotation had compared to the other variables. I think I knew this at some level, it is just good to see it in print.  It tends to suggest that a lot of variability without changing balls.

Also, notice the effect of changing RG. This is not what I would have expected.  The total hook is almost the same, but the path of the ball is different.

I hope more companies put information out like this, and laud Columbia for the published data.

Thanks,
Scott

I agree that is a good tech doc. I found
it interesting how manipulation of the axis
rotation angle has such a impact on the amount of
hook.

It's good when a ball company tries to educate
the public on all the varibles that can alter the
balls path.
I like the last line, "Bowling is a thinking man's game
which makes it so great."

Beware of "too much" rotation axis (or angle); it makes the ball skid further before it hooks. It can easily make the lane tricky and sensitive when there's medium or heavier amounts of oil. Matching ball surface to rotation "angle" becomes a skillful balancing act.

I was fooloing around with change of rotation angle in the last half of my last practice game today and the ball flew thru the breakpoint several times before I balanced speed, angle, ball surface and speed.

Such changes takes more than a few frames of practice!
