Pro-Ams
« on: October 25, 2004, 04:39:43 AM »
I am curious if anyone has ever been to a pro-am and what it was like.

I will be bowling my first pro-am in April '05 the day before the TOC. They havent released what pros will be bowling yet, but at this point I dont really care. I just want to go and have fun. Anyone who has ever done a pro am, please chime in and tell me your experience.

Just remember that the chances of you winning money/scholarships (for my case) is not that good.

They are just more of a social event. They are quite fun, however. The perks are good, especially if there are balls being sold at or below cost.

They are a lot of fun however they should not be considered a competition. They use the 3/6/9 strike rule, meaning everyone automatically gets a strike in those frames. In the past you only got 3 pro's one for each game but last year they started switching every 5 frames so you now end up with 6. So your chances of getting someone you like are increased, but only for half a game. They are great fun, I have been taking my son to them for 4 or so years and we have a great time. But don't take them to seriously. And it's a house shot not what they bowl on, at least the ones I have attended.

Well, from what I have read on the specific Pro Am I am going to, the shot will be a walled up house shot. And it will be a 9 pin no tap tourney. Either way just looking to go and have fun and meet some pros!!

Don't think it's going to be a house shot!!!

One of the things the pros LOVE to do is embarass amateurs.
The more of an area bowler you are and carry master the more they will embarass you.

I'll tell you of my two experiences.

For a ladies regional.
Night before I'm bowling pot games with the boys averaging about 230 and finish 24X 24x using my leverage drilled violet hammer 3D(a smooth ball).  I say I'll just bring this and show the ladies a thing or two.

I bring the above smooth member and it's sort of a pattern C with a little wet outside of 10 and I can't keep the ball on the lane.  Big reaction over under I shoot mid 400s.  Humiliating because I've gone to world challenge shots and shot big 6XX.  They told me before oh yeah House shot.  In the meantime the ladies are covering about 4 boards, weak pins small kick outs firm on a small swing down 12 to 12!

Next regional same thing.  This time no tap.  "House shot" again.  YEAH right!
I bring one leverage drilled ball if it is!  I also bring a bunch of solids with kick out.  Crimson Red, Ti Hawk, big weightholes on Pap and smooth backend reaction.  Next to me are some of our young gunslingers!!!  All about 200 average and lots of carry.

This with the regional men and a few PBA titlists from the Big show!

First game I throw a REAL 266!  Little swing on this medium length deep oil, ob outside of 10 and flying humumgous backends.  You hit the pocket you strike.

Only a big 4 keeps me from a 300 if I remember right!
Next to me, Big fling A and B shoot no tap scores of 129 and 107!!!

He HE.  Watch out for this house shot!

Bring stuff that you've put away because it no longer hooks enough for league or you can hit the pocket but it leaves flat 10s!

I have bowled 2 PBA Pro-Ams and 4 or so WWPB Pro AMs.  They are great.  The men are a bit more social than the ladies.

The last few women's ones the ladies were friendlier than in the past.  Might be due to the lose of the PWBA or that I am getting to meet more of them in my home center.  I'll be bowling a WWPB Pro AM in a few weeks and am hoping to bowl the PBA one in Fountain Valley in December.

As for cashing you have to be lucky enough to bowl well and have your pros also bowl well.  I've seen the amature bowl very well only to be paired up with struggling pros and not cash.

Use it for fun i bowled the pro/am at the henderson regional in August, they used the 5 frame rule. Well it was fun to beat my pros scratch and have one ask if i was entering the tournament the next morning. Nothing like bowling these guys in my house and my shot it was fun for the night and the best part was being a lane sponsor i get a free ball from Ebonite because the event started late. I think the new Xcel sounds good

I was under the impression that at national events, all exempt players bowling that event were required to bowl in the pro-am.  The new ownership wants it to be a positive tool in improving public relations and one of the ways to do that is to make sure the "big names" are bowling the pro-ams.
