just what does it cost??
« on: June 13, 2014, 05:17:55 PM »
i have been wondering for many years just how much does it cost to one pair of  oil lanes for league night on average.
here in east tx it is like they are  saving thousands by not oiling  the lanes or by using the least oil to get by

yea 50,000 square foot building from 20 to 30 feet ceilings not easy keeping this building cool for customers so lots of electricity is spent on mostly ac unit and with the bowling center that use to be a manufacturer plant it takes alot of electricity to keep the center cool from for 24 hours. But anyways oil is a must have or else your lanes would look like crap from surface damage.

For Sale, 50,000 sq ft building, use to be bowling center. Went out of business, couldn't afford utilities!! lol Just kidding, but really how do you keep the doors open with just that one expense? Factor in other utilities, maintenance, employees, etc... Just wondering!

The electricity for two of our facilities combined was around $22,000 recently.

The biggest threat to bowling centers is not going broke, but rather not being able to earn a return per square foot comparable to what other business could earn from similar property.  This is especially a problem in metro areas.

I was thinking the same thing...Add in payroll, insurance, etc....His numbers just don't seem right to me.  Unless of course the place is constantly and i mean constantly full whether is be bowling, arcade, restaurant/bar, etc... We'd be broke if our electric bill was that high!

Indeed I didn't believe the 30 grand nonsense but when the owner showed me the check he had to wrote. I just couldn't agree to paying such things. The previous owner of my center went bankrupt oweing brunswick i believe a million dollars plus utility cost. so iono risky business owning this family center.

Also, newest Kegel machines cost 38k.  Add in the cost of pinsetters lanes and scorekeeping equipment.  You get a tremendous capital investment.  Earning anything close to a decent return on such a high investment is very difficult.

Operating costs aren't the killer for bowling centers.  Debt service on capital is.

There have been a lot of centers close in the city in the last 30 years.

About 10 years ago a new center was built to replace an old one.

It has 32 lanes (24 for leagues and 8 dedicated to parties and glow bowling), a go cart race track and arcade.

It cost about $7 million to build new. At 5% they needed about $30,000 a month to cover just the interest.

Most centers still going have long ago paid for themselves.

It is going to be interesting. One of the bigger centers in town is coming up on the end of it's building lease. They are suppose to be one of the host centers for the Women's nationals in a few years but they may not be able to afford the new lease.
