Author Topic: HELP!!!! PIN PLACEMENT & TOP WEIGHT (Read 13822 times)

I need some help with ordering a Seismic Venator. I'm a stroker. High track.
When you order they ask you pin placement 2-3" or 3-4" Why? and what is
the different and top weight 2-3 oz or 3-4 oz same thing.
A little lost. Please Help thanks

Ask the person that will be drilling the ball. Discuss with them what layout your considering and if your wanting to add an x-hole or not.

That is the only person you need to ask.

I agree. If you are doing a pin above fingers, then get a 3-4 pin. If you are doing a pin down, then get a 1-2 or a 2-3. I always request top weight around 3 oz. Higher top weights are not as driller friendly if you are doing some exotic layout that will require a weight hole. If no weight hole is required, then top weight wont matter. But, as Kid suggested, discuss lay out with your driller and then base ball specs off of that.

Thanks for the response, I have a first blood by hammer and a storm lucid both are
drilled with the pin close to the ring finger to the right with a weight hole. Both the hammer and storm react pretty much the same. I want to bowl further out closer
to the gutter to get more of a angle on the pocket for better pin carry. (I bowl about the 9 board with these balls). So I bought an Storm Super Naturel. It is drill the same way and believe it or not I can bowl the same line with the same result. But it does
not have the pin carry as the first blood or Lucid. Just thought pin placement and top weight would help but don't know which way to go. any answers?

Pin placements have nothing to do with pin carry. It is all about matching the ball to the condition. What kind of condition are you on and what do the other two balls do that you dont like that you need another ball? A Lucid and First Blood to a Super Natural is a HUGE gap.

Another thing: What are your specs? Ball speed, rev rate, axis point...etc?

Pin placement is merely a reference to how far the marker pin is from the balls center of gravity. Depending on the reaction you are trying to achieve, it can be somewhat important to get the proper pin placement.

The term top weight refers to the static imbalance that is built into the ball as an effect of the manufacturing process. Having either too much, or too little, top weight can have an effect on the after drilling reaction, and is the major factor in the need for, size of, and placement of, any extra weight holes you may end up needing/wanting in the ball.

As others have stated, get with a good shop person, show them what you have, tell them what it does, and tell them what you are looking for. If they are worth their salt, they will be able to help you greatly.

Thanks again for the response, A little of the past. It has been a long time from
bowling about 38 years. caught up in life. Thought I would do some things I used to
like doing. Bowling is one of them. When I was a teen I avg. around 226 with a rubber ball. Now the game has changed big time. difference lane, the oil is heaver,
and the balls with cores and difference coverstocks WOW!!!! Trying to learn.
I been back bowling about 5 months just weekends. 4 to 6 games each weekend day.
Bought the First Blood first. All over the place the first month or so. The house I bowl at seems to be dry most of the time. I avg. around 180 now but have some good days. Best 248. I bought the storm super natural second. Why? thought I could bowl
way outside to get more of an angle on the pocket. Should get better pin carry?
I did not matter. Bought the lucid because of it ratings. To me they are all the same.
Like I said I'm a stroker. rev rate I don't know. The track on the ball is about 1/2" from my middle finger and about 1/2" from my thumb (high Track) I guess what I'm
trying to do is to make the ball hook more. If I play inside and try to throw towards
the outside the ball never comes back to the pocket. Must be not enough rev's ?
My release is thumb up and shake hands, follow through. All in all I can take any
ball I have and it reacts the same. Hooks the same. I have had a few people watch.
They don't believe it either. Any ball same same I feel lost??? Just trying to get better. want to get back pretty close to where I was.

I might only add that it might also be worth 1/2 hour with a local to evaluate your release. If you not getting a First Blood to hook back on dry lanes when standing inside and throwing outside my first thought would be to look at your hand at the point of release to see why your not getting as much revs on the ball as you could. Perhaps you are coming over the back or perhaps you are not getting your hand along side of the ball as much as you could.

A 1/2 hour with a coach followed by a conversation with your driller will be time well spent.

Just my 2 cents.
