Pro Shop guys...what do you think?
« on: April 08, 2005, 10:53:54 AM »
Just bought a Raging Inferno off of here. So far I like the reaction that I'm getting out of it. The problem lies with the ball span. The ball has about a span of 4 5/8. My span is roughly about 4 3/8. The thumb hole is slightly a bit big for me as well. I'm trying to decide if I should just plug the thumb and redrill this ball, or put in new grips and a lot of tape on the thumb. The span is a bit long for me, however I can still throw it. What should I do? I'm kind of undecided.

You're asking if it is okay to stretch your span 1/4"?

Hey TJ, I can make it simple, that is my exact span. Just send it my way, I'll take care of the rest.

Seriously, I would just get a thumb slug stuck in it, assuming it does not have one. The slug may give you enough room to adjust the span to 4 3/8. I always feel best throwing something that is my exact span. Guys that know more, does that sound reasonable?

Just asking for opinions nick.
Fabes...the ball already has a thumb slug.

Also...How difficult is it to remove a thumb slug?

freaky,

I would not use tape to adjust size that much. It will make your pitches in the thumb different (MORE THANK LIKELY). Just have it redone, having all of your equipment feel as close to the same as possible if VERY important.

I tried throwing a ball with a span 1/4" too big for me.  I couldn't get enough lift and I had no consistency.  Putting in a lot of tape will probably change your pitch (because when I do so, it 'feels' different).  I have a lot more confidence throwing something that fits me.

It does sound like a plug, or a plug and slug job is in order for a span error of that much.  Otherwise, you probably won't be happy with the end result.

Hey TJ,

Definitely plug and redrill to fit your current equipment.  A span too long can cause you to pull or strain ligaments/tendons in your hand which can then extend upwards thru your arm, not good.  Also check the finger pitches to see how close they are to yours, if they have forward and you have reverse (hypothetical situation), that can also cause some tendon/ligament damage.  Always best to match to what works, try not to take the inexpensive approach to this.
