Why is a undersized ball illegal?

I'm not sure about problems from ball reaction or hitting power perspectives, but they aren't always handled properly by the ball return equipment.  It would get annoying quickly to have to call the desk to get a ball out of the ball return every fifth shot.

Because the size (diameter) is only monitored/measured at the manufacturer's stage, according to USBC rules and interpretations. Thereafter, "Specifications are on the initial manufactured ball and there is not a rule or specification on the size of the bowling ball during league or tournament play." (quote from a message from a USBC rep)

I undersand that smaller balls are more effective, with regard to pin moving ability.

I believe Ebonite did a study on this and found that undersized balls actually carry better. Not a whole lot, but enough to be useful to a professional where a few sticks are the difference between a check and no check.
