How many bowling balls should I have
« on: August 13, 2005, 01:24:13 PM »
I currently own only 1 ball, but plan on getting a spare ball soon. What other balls should I have.

P.S. I have <a href='http://67.15.154.58/cmapp/zx-hclick.php?hid=2' target='_blank'>the</a> smokin' inferno

Depending on what you bowl on, how many different lane conditions, I think a person could get away with two balls and a spare ball, as a minimum. JMO

Depends on how many it would take before the wife started complaining about 'em.

If you plan to bowl in tournys, then I think you'd need at least 6, if you bowl in different houses, then at least 3 that match the oil for the houses, if you stay in one house, or they are set the same , oil conditions, then you can get away with 2, but 3 would probably be better, all plus a spare ball.

I personally own 6, carry 3 and a spare. I bowl mainly in one house, that's all that is within an hours drive of me, so I know the conditions. No matter what you see, read here, it all has to do with what can YOU do with the ball/s you have. If you can move in, out, then one ball can do the work of maybe two, so it all depends on your ability and conditions you have.

Now that I have confused you, hope than helps.

Thanks to all for the advice, right now i bowl in only one house, but starting in september I will bowl in another league at another house. I bowled in the JST state tournament in July and plan on starting to bowl in more tournaments. So a good arsenal for me would be a Heavy oil, Medium, a ball that reads the lanes well (forgot the word for that type of ball), light oil, and a spare ball?

IMO, a good line up would be 4 balls. Heavy, Med-heavy, Med-light and a spare ball. Keeping in mind, you would need to know the limitations of you, and each ball. Practice on as many different conditions with each ball, as possible. Even if that condition does not match that ball. Reason ? learn to come in, go down and in, just about any type shot you can do with each ball.

I'm sure there are many who will disagree, but as in golf, you can learn to do things with clubs that were not made for that shot/condition. Pros have learned to do things, when needed, that were not the intention of that club/ball. Point in fact, Parker Bohn, shooting through three chairs and making a strike ! I doubt any ball company ever thought of a shot like that when they made a ball.

Learn the limitations of the ball and your shot making ability, and you'll see improvement and more enjoyments time goes on...JMO.

Here's a unique approach... you should have no more balls than you can carry at one time.  Immense rollers are optional.  Too bad I don't follow this suggestion.

There really is no limit to how many bowling balls you should own. I currently have 7 or 8 but i dont use then all.
I usually take 4 to leagues and tournaments.

If you have a reactive, buying a spare is the next important step. Then, as an addition, consider primarily a weaker ball, with higher RG, to stay in the game when the line dries up and the SI becomes too itchy (maybe a Punisher, or a Rampage, drilled for less oil). A secondary addition could be a matte particle ball or a strong solid reactive, as an upward addition to the SI. You will surely face conditions when even the SI will only slip and simply not work - then this will be handy.
Such a 4-ball arsenal, when covertstocks and drillings match up, should be anything you need to be competitive almost everywhere. And a fingertip polyester will also keep you in play even on scorched ground.

A friend just built an arsenal with a Punisher, an Absolte Inferno and has got himself now an Xxxcel for heavy oil. For him, this works just fine!

Thanks for the info all, I've been thinking about either the punisher or the rampage as a lighter oil ball, my friend's dad has the punisher but I would like to try out the rampage. I've seen the Blazing inferno and Monster Slayr for fairly cheap online, would either of these be a good light oil or carry down ball?
