Ball has gained weight from Hot Water Bath
« on: May 16, 2008, 11:44:43 AM »
Just curious to see if the ball would gain weight, I weighed the ball before I soaked it for 30 min.  After the bath the ball gained about 5 oz.  It has been about a week since the bath and the ball weighs 5 0z heavier.  How do I remove the excess water weight?

have you tried shaking the water out? If that does not work, I would stick a straw in one of the finger holes and suck really hard.

That was a good one. Yay!!!

I've got an honest question to those who have used this method effectively:

If these balls are porous enough to soak up lane conditioner (and they are), why couldn't they soak up some water?  And, if they do soak some up, do they "dry out", and how long does that take?

Interested in the responses, so don't be shy...

I've used the hot-water method many times and never had anything remotely like this problem.  Nothing but success

The ball is for sure heavier than before.  I've seen some older posts were someone said their ball gained a half pound or more.  That seems hard to believe, but in my case the ball has gained a noticeable gain in weight.

Stick in the microwave for a 2 - 3 minutes on high. That should evaporate the water and BLOW UP THE BALL!!!! Stand about 3 feet in front of it to get the best effect.

I don't doubt that others have been able to successfully use the hot water bath without their ball gaining weight, but is EVERY BALL the same?

Isn't there the possibility that SOME could soak up and retain some water? I'm not a rocket scientist like many of you seem to be so I'm just asking...

Do you have a crack in the core?   Look inside the finger/thumb/wt holes.

While anything is possible ...
Pour a measure of 5 ounces of water that's a awful lot of water.
For a core or the filler to absorb that much, I think the core/filler would have to be incredibly porous and hydrophilic. I'd like to hear a little bit more about what method was used to weigh this ball. In fact, I'd like to know more about the ball, before I even accept the initial proviso.

My rocket scientist diploma on the wall is glowing violet and the wall it's hanging on is vibrating. Is that a bad sign?

charlest,

Someday we've got to meet in person. You and I could talk about these "mysteries" for hours and probably not solve anything, but I'd enjoy it.

I agree that we need more information, but everyone seems eager to dismiss the idea that it even happened. Maybe it gained 2 or 3 ounces in weight, maybe it dries out, maybe the ball didn't gain any weight, maybe I'll have to try it someday in the shop with a dodo scale, etc.  I've never tried it up to now because we have the Revivor and there's no need.

Sorry about your rocket scientist diploma, but when you hang it on those padded walls...
