45' Flat Sport Pattern

SkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSkidSNAP.

Getting a turkey was a gift tonight.  No buff, no wall, just 45' of equal volume from 1-board to 1-board.  One had to split hairs on the lane to make it to the pocket, and even then carry was less than desired.

I shot 520 and felt like I accomplished something.  THIS is what REAL bowling is all about.

After the league was over, I jumped over to the fresh buffer pair and threw 4 more games for practice.  I was bowling with one of the juniors - a 13 year old lefty - who was giving me a run for my money.  First game I beat him by only 15 or so pins.  Next game he shoots 190 to my 196.  His was a clean game, I had a split late in the game but a few more strikes than he had.  Next game he struggles to shoot 134 or so and I go on to shoot 227.  By the 4th game the lanes were fried and we were just looking for oil.  I shot 176 or so to his 160 something.

The kid's got game.  No doubt.  He's also got a lot more guts than most house hacks I know.

I tried something a little bit different in the 4 game practice session.  During league play, I was wary of going to the outside of the lane because I figured it would be more difficult to get back to the head pin.  I decided to see what it was like out there with no penalty for screwing up.  So I grabbed my Columbia Shock and went straight up 5.  After playing around with angles, foot placement, etc. I put together the aforementioned scores which brought me a 580ish series, 20 pins/game higher than in league play.

On the practice pair I had to change balls to keep up with the moving oil, but that won't be the case in league play because we switch pairs every game.

I think next week I should be able to get much closer to 600 than I did last night.

Pin,

I know what you mean. One of the local houses set-up a high-low night for the league and put out a former US Open shot for fun 41ft, all forward application. High for the league was 599, was definitely more 400's and 300's for 3 than 500's. Agregate average for the league is about 190 on THS. I shot a whopper 482 for 3. I was the only one in an 80-90 man league to stay after and throw more games on the shot. I changed pairs tried a few diff things and shot 809 for 4 more games. I have never tried the 45ft. Tried the 50ft with med volume once and that was a new experience in humility. In the end of your post was the same sentiment I felt even after shooting horribly the first three. I was stoked to get back onto the shot and go after it, it provided excitement that the THS does not produce as minor mistakes or inconsistencies are covered up by bumpering the oil. Kudos to you, as it is a treat to be challenged in todays enviroment of scores and not ability.

Thanks, Lefty.  If more bowlers were willing to put their egos on the shelf and give the tough conditions a try, they too could share in the warm feelings that follow real rather than faux accomplishment.

I can't find any sport shots here in Long Island. If I could I would try it out.

Airplay go on the PBA message boards and ask around. Couple houses near the city or LI that throw some shots out.

The best/worst thing I did was join a sport league this year.  My average is about 25 pins lower, but I've become a better spare shooter.  I hate to admit this though...  One of the main things I've learned... I'm not as good as I thought I was.
