High RG-Low RG

Whats the difference, what are they for, and what type of bowler would go for either one. As a stroker bout 15/16mph ive never really thought about this when i buy balls.

The most basic description is Higher the RG the more length a ball is prone to having, its wants to rev up later and doesn't get into a roll as early, vise versa the lower the RG the sooner a ball wants to get into a roll and start hooking.  Higher RG balls are more Cover Heavy and Lower RG balls are more center heavy.  Generally speaking if your looking for more backend you want to go with a higher RG and of course if you want the ball to read earlier, grab sooner, or arch more you want a ball with a lower RG.  All of this ball reaction can be tweaked will driling and surface prep even further.

Low RG Core (2.49 and below):  Revs and starts rolling (hooking) sooner.

Medium RG Core (2.5-2.55):  Best of both worlds as it starts a little bit later than the low RG core but sooner than the high RG core.

High RG Core (2.56 and higher):  Revs and starts rolling (hooking) later.

Most strokers (at least in my house) like to go with low-med RG cores (2.45-2.55) and they work pretty well for most of them.  Remember that you will need a fair amount of oil up front on the lane if you decide to go with a lower RG core (unless of course you polish the ball).

With all coverstocks being equal, that is true, but with the differences in todays coverstocks, that is not always true. There are some high RG balls out there that now start-up like a low or medium RG ball because of the aggressiveness of their cover.

I agree but I thought that was understood.  Supermo was just asking about the core differences and not the variety of coverstocks I believe (at least that I what I derived from his post).  Of course coverstocks come into play on any ball but strictly speaking from a core standpoint, a lower RG core will roll up sooner.

Bowling balls rev because we impart the spin.. they do not rev on there own.

A ball with a low rg is easier to rev becuase it is said to me center heavy... while high rg is said to be shell heavy. This relates to mid lane specifically, the easier to rev ball will read the mid lanes sooner.

Given two balls comprising the same shell, layout and top wieght, the Low RG ball will want to rev up sooner and easier as compared to the High RG ball.

All these variables are at best, educated guesses as to how much any one variable will make a difference.

Thanks guys you've been a great help....now i dont know what ball to buy, its getting very technical but in a good way.I can now ask more questions as to what the specs are on the ball i get.
