Inserts
« on: June 21, 2005, 02:06:01 PM »
I recently changed inserts in my ball.  Previous inserts were the type with the flat edge on the bottom, and the new inserts are just plain oval.

I didn't have a lot of revs to begin with, and now with the new inserts I think I am getting even less!  It's hard to say for sure because I've only thrown 3 games with the new inserts, and my league conditions are never consistent (sometimes the backends are really crisp, sometimes the middle is oily and the outside is toast, or vice versa), but I really had trouble getting my fingers into the ball.

The new inserts feel much better (old inserts always felt a little tight, or would start to hurt my finger tips after a few games), but they also feel bigger.  Sizes are the same, but the new inserts feel much bigger (not too big for my fingers, but they aren't tight like before - I actually didn't feel any pain in my fingers after bowling this week).

I'm just wondering if anybody has experienced anything similar, or if maybe this is something that will take a little while to get used too?  I almost switched balls (to a ball with the old type inserts) because it just looked like my ball was rolling almost straight down the lane, and I just couldn't seem to get any rotation.

If the old balls were Power Ovals and the new ones are just Ovals, they would probably be giving you less lift on the ball, which might mean fewer revs . . . Not 100% sure if I'm right though.

Yeah, the whole point of the edge things is to get more lift, and more revs.  And the reason they feel bigger is because they don't have the lift things, which take up more space.

Power Lifts add a bit to your lift. The regular ovals or just plain inserts will not. You will have to 'create' your own lift and revs due to the change. It will feel a bit strange, but once you've used lifts, I'd never go without them, just me.

I have 'felt' a slight tighter feel, with lifts. I went so far as to step uo 1/64 larger, but until my fingers swelled, they felt to large. It's what you get used to or the right feel for you.

Do the lifts also change the pitch in the finger holes?  I thought I read somewhere that they added a little ??

I'm wondering if I'll get used to these or I should go back to the power lift - I'm glad I only changed them in 1 ball and not the rest!

I bought 20 sets of these inserts, so I'm hoping I can make them work.  I guess I will have to actually learn how to put my fingers into the ball instead of letting the inserts do all the work for me!

qstick,

If they feel loose, use shims to tighten them up. My finger shrink and swell quite a bit thru a night's bowling. So I adjust them with shims.

- Make sure the back of the finger insert is not glued to the hole; glue or have your driller only glue the sides.
- Cut a business card (decent thickness, not too thick, like cardboard; not too thin, like paper) into pieces about 1/2" x 1/2" and 3/8" x 1/2".
- Use a 1/8" wide slotted small screw driver (also great for inserting and removing pieces of thumbhole tape) to pry the insert from the back of the hole and insert a shim so that it does not stick above the level of the top of the insert.
- Use 1, 2, 3 or however many pieces you need.
- Don't make it so tight that you have to force your finger in; make it snug enough to prevent you from being able to put the finger in past the first knuckle.

Works well for me.

good luck

Thanks charlest, I'll give that a try.  I put them in, but I don't remember if I glued the top/bottom, or the sides.  I have 20 pair, so I think I have enough that I can play around with them a little bit.

I'm not opposed to them, but the point is that I bought 20 pair of inserts and, if at all possible, I'd like to be able to use them.

Does anybody know if there is a way to make the inserts more tacky?  I've been looking at them and I think maybe some of the problem is the inserts feel a little slippery.  Is there anything I can use to make them a little stickier, or less slick?  Maybe some rubbing alcohol, or some sand paper or something?

I clean mine with denatured ethyl alcohol, bought in Home Depot. 91% isopropyl alcohol (household alcohol) will also work well.

sandpaper? - NO!
acetone? - No! (it'll literally dissolve the soft vinyl inserts)

My driller that just punched up my Absolute ran out of the inserts with the flat edge at the bottoma and gave me plain ovals. I found that i had to jam my fingers in there because they seemed real tight even though they were the same size as my normal ones. i also got less revs i think. anyway, i dont like the ovals ones all that much, though i probably could get used to them.
