PRO SHOPS WILL FACE A LONG LONELY SUMMER
« on: May 03, 2005, 05:44:55 AM »
Now that the USBC proposals have filtered down to most bowlers....I'm already losing business.....I have had three bowlers that were going to get new balls NOW decide not to....They want to wait & see if this NEW usbc rule passes....I do not really blame them....Who wants to spend 200.00 & have to throw the ball away in two years??....Also one in four bowlers I talked to in three different houses say if they have to throw away their current equipment they will quit....THATS!!!! 25% people....And these are the guys that buy 3 or more balls each year & bowl in multiple leagues.....The three owners I talked to Say they will just not sanction & give out their own awards....BOWLING FACES A LONG LONELY SUMMER

Um, didn't I read that balls we have today will be grandfathered in and legal?  If that's true it makes more sense to me to buy  a LOT of balls now.

I think it unlikely that balls without the USBC logo will be declared illegal. And the USBC needs to make that clear. Or...see a disaster in the pro shops...
Trust me...it goes beyond just pro shops.  What about people that NIB balls stored away?  What about the people that sell large quantities of Balls on Ebay?  What about the distributors that have older equipement?  This will touch a whole lot of people.

The new rules will take effect, if approved, January 1, 2006.  All balls manufactured and/or drilled before that date are grandfathered in UNTIL January 1, 2008.

They are grandfathered in ONLY until 1/1/08.

If this rule passes, people will still bowl, they just won't sanction.

With particle balls and short oil, the ABC/USBC gave up the authority to rule the game years ago. It will be very difficult to get that authority back.

Jeff has posted the most common sense statement among all the posts I have seen about this USBC Topic. Everyone needs to quit getting wound up and acting like a bunch of kids that didn't get their way and first wait and see what happens. All of the whinning and complaining you do isn't going to change what the USBC does at the present. Maybe the future, but not the present. Sorry everyone if this statement makes anyone mad at me as that isn't my intention. If I have abused anyone with this statement, let me know and I will delete this post.

I was just simply stating how I see it from where I sit.

Perfect solution to the ball changes, lets limit the amount of balls you can bring to any USBC event; then everyone will not have to go out and buy ten new balls.

At the same time, you could write a letter containing constructive criticism to the USBC since they have requested feedback.  This might be just a wild guess, but they've probably heard enough whining and throw it all on the junk heap.

A better place to start might be to find out which state and/or local representives will be making the trip to Florida.  Express your concerns to them so they can pass it along during the open and organized forum. Part of their jobs as directors is to pass along our feelings and thoughts.

As far a the logo requirement, here is the wording:

quote:
a. All balls will be required to be manufactured with the USBC logo and year made as of 1/1/06. The USBC ball logo must be a minimum of two (2) inches in diameter and be engraved in the same manner as any other logo on the ball. The USBC ball logo will not be the same USBC logo currently used on the ball boxes. We suggest the USBC ball logo be placed on the bottom of the ball. The USBC ball logo will be e-mailed to all ball manufacturers as soon as it is available.

If I interpret this correctly, it just says that balls being manufactured as of 1/1/06 require the logo. It implies that older balls that meet the CG drill specs will still be OK.

I don't like this whole thing, because it will have little impact on higher end scoring. However, it shouldn't cause bowlers to freak about getting new equipment. Just drill it according to the proposed standards, and it should be good to go for the life of the ball (or at least until another proposal hits the fan).

Most people get new equipment every two years anyways....and besides there are too many balls that go through inspection and fail and that is one of the biggies right there...and far as the CG placement I think that on inch from center of grip is fine...I don't know a bowler who needs the cg to be kicked out 3 inches away from the center of grip...You know though even though it says 1 inch away that would not completly eliminate weight holes because of high top weights...so the manufactures are going to have to stay between 2.75 and 3oz of top weight to ensure the inch away specification will hold true....and I really don't know if this will pass anyways because we are talking about too wide of spectrum of people this will affect.....I am pretty sure they will pass little things each year until they get where they want to be....a big change like they are proposing will probably drop sanctioning by at least 10% I would say and that is ALOT for the USBC....so lets just all wait and see....

I'm not sure who your "most people" are, but they sure aren't the same "most people" that I see.  "Most people" around here are still using the same one ball that they bought 5 to 7 years ago, and they aren't going to be happy if they can't use it for the next 5 years.

Welcome to the world.  Where I bowl there about 8 - 10 of us who regularly buy equipment (and I buy most of mine used) out of about 300 association members.  In league I see stuff that's 8 to 10 years old on a regular basis.  Out of 10 balls on the rack on any given night, at least 6 are older than 2 years.  So in the future please get facts straight on "most".  Yes, most of us who post here probably get equipment on at least a 2 year interval, but for the vast majority of members, well let's just say "I don't think so."
