PRO SHOPS WILL FACE A LONG LONELY SUMMER
« on: May 03, 2005, 05:44:55 AM »
Now that the USBC proposals have filtered down to most bowlers....I'm already losing business.....I have had three bowlers that were going to get new balls NOW decide not to....They want to wait & see if this NEW usbc rule passes....I do not really blame them....Who wants to spend 200.00 & have to throw the ball away in two years??....Also one in four bowlers I talked to in three different houses say if they have to throw away their current equipment they will quit....THATS!!!! 25% people....And these are the guys that buy 3 or more balls each year & bowl in multiple leagues.....The three owners I talked to Say they will just not sanction & give out their own awards....BOWLING FACES A LONG LONELY SUMMER

Well I look at this as a chance for the "Bowling Community" to finally stand up against the "system" who has been raising our fees every year without us seeing anything from it.

Simply write a letter or email to the USBC and let them know that if ANY of these rules pass, then you will simply not bowl a sanctioned league. If enough bowlers do this, they will get the hint and not push the issue.

By the way, in our letters or emails we should all suggest that making the pins heavier is an easier solution to the scoring pace, follwed closely by standardizing lane conditions.

Hammer, I know that standardizing the lanes won't happen, but it's a better option than trying to control the way balls are made and drilled.

I personally would rather see PBA lane conditions for all leagues, so that the average bowler will have some respect for what the Pros bowl on.

Its jsut a proposal, i don't plan on buying any new balls for the next few years, its kind of angers me cause i have a few balls that are for special purpose and for tournament use and i don't bowl that many tournaments but they have saved me when i needed them,  and i don't use them in regular leagues. There is no way i can afford to replace those balls when they are illegal jsut because they don't have a label on them. I plan on just buying used stuff for the next few years because of the uncertainty. Who knows what other change they could make, that would suck if you have stock piles of  perticular type of ball that you liked from years ago.

I'm one of those who happens to have SEVERAL favorite balls stockpiled back, NIB, already drilled and ready to roll.  And it just so happens that ALL of these balls will be deemed illegal, due to the CG kick and balance holes.  If the USBC tells me that my equipment is illegal, then they can take their USBC card and keep it, since I won't be needing it anymore.

Does anyone realize that this is just a proposal, it doesn't even get voted on until June 28, 2005?

Did you ever stop to think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, since this proposal was announced a week ago that you're not the only person emailing them?  That the USBC is having to field tens of thousands, of emails, letters and phone calls from all across the country?  You've had to wait a whole 3 days, wow.  Exactly what makes you so special that an organization that serves MILLIONS should drop everything just to answer your question?  Try patience.

Here's a thought, have you called your local association to express your concerns and to ask your questions?

I know the USBC just made a proposal....BUT!!!!....This proposal shows their mindset(that's the scary part)....How can anyone with any sense blame the balls!!!!....If not does not make any difference if it is plastic, rubber or a resin ball...If the lane is dressed with oil in such a way to guide the ball to the pocket....This condition was illegal in the 1970's!!!!!....And I bowled in the 1970's & If I had the same Help with the oil pattern I would have averaged in the 220's along with thousands of others even with plastic & rubber balls....THE USBC PROPOSAL SHOWS THEY ARE A CLUELESS ORGANIZATION....I have emailed them & written them & bluntly told them MY VIEWS....PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR THE GOOD OF THE GAME!!!!!

I think Bob H & No Fear echo what I feel. 1) They need to start with the coverstock (I'm ALWAYS told be ALL the experts that this has the most effect on reaction) 2) They need to have REAL guidelines for lane dressing.

I am not an expert on the current management make-up of the USBC, but believe they need to bring in a chemist and engineer (physics person) to consult with.

As I said in another post, if MLB players use wood, why can't PBA (PGA for that matter) use plastic / urethane (wood for golf). For USBC leagues / tournaments, fine to use their rules. But, as others have said, you may see MORE non-sanctioned leagues.

PS - can everyone say "RIVAL ORGANIZATION"?

From what I read the key words were "grandfather clause" As long as old equipment fit in with the specs, its no big deal.  As far as the USBC label, the rule would only apply to balls made after the rule's effective date.

Yes, the regs do talk about grandfathering.  But if you read carefully, it also says they will be legal until 1/1/08.  As I read it, that means that only balls that meet the new regs will be legal after 1/1/08.  --  JohnP

Bob Hanson(of whom I greatly respect)....I agree lanes have always been oiled to help somewhat(even in the 70's)....But blocked in the 70's??? No Way(not to todays standards)....The best I ever averaged in the 1970's was 205 & thats using a Columbia yellow dot.....In 1996 I used My same yellow dot an entire season in one league & averaged 227....Yes I do believe the NEW balls have had an impact on scoring....But the "Great Berlin Wall of Oil" in the middle of lanes today is the main reason for scoring...Not the Balls!!!!....Sport conditions have proved that Lane conditions Stop Scoring....

Does anyone else wonder how the proposal was conceived? Seems like any real executive/management body would have formed a panel of players to attack the runaway scores (aka "lack of integrity") from at least the majority of major players... (Pin makers/Center MGRs/Ball manufacturers/oil makers/lanebed makers etc) and get everyone's input before an Official Letter was published... Some companies have to fold after blunders like this... Seems not well thought out to me... a waste of my dues paid. I wasn't expecting this after the big "merger."

However, I hope all this unnecessary "knee-jerk" discussion gets paid attention to... I just wanna bowl and know when I shoot 700+ or an honor score, I deserved it and when my opponent beats me... he outbowled me by repeating shots, making good line changes, hand position changes, speed changes, seeing the transition and yes, even good ball changes.

This really ticks me off. I have only been bowling for one year and now I hear that soon my bowling balls will have to be put away?! All of my bowling balls are fully aggressive and 3 of them have weight holes. Like was stated before. I'm not a money tree. I can't just go out and buy an entirely new arsenal. Plus I like my arsenal way too much to give it up. PERIOD.
