spareing problems...Help please..
« on: May 31, 2004, 07:25:13 PM »
First of all a quick Hi to everyone, feels like Ive been away a long time.
Ive been having a few problems of late with my spare game (4 months). Well single and double pins to be more exact.
I have a storm soccer ball and Im finding my accuracy with it is well, preety poor.
Last night I finally gave up on it and went to an old Columbia Red Pulse which I was using with an up the back release to keep it straight as I try with my Soccer ball.
Accuracy was as good as my strike ball, which has been my saving grace over the last few months.
Result 2 clean games and 4 opens in the other 2.( 1w/o, 2 split)
Now my question. This was on fresh oil and I found it easy to keep the Pulse straight, however when the lanes dry out I may have trouble doing this. So I was thinking of getting a urethane ball to replace the soccer ball, which I could also use for patchy lanes.
I think my problem with the soccer ball is the feel in my hand. Not that its drilled differently (driller checked) just that I have very dry hands and the ball seems to slip and slide during my release.
Anyone have similar problems and which ball would you suggest. Im leaning towards the XXL as I cant get an old Pink Hammer which would have been my first chioce.(thicker cover better roll)
Sorry for the long post, but Ive really been suffering you know

What kind of problems exactly, other than missing them?

Are you hooking your spare ball at the pins?  Missing consistantly either left or right?  Dont know how to line up for the spare?

Just to get you started:

I assume you mean off your thumb.  If so, have you tried a piece of white bowling tape in the thumbhole to help you grip the ball?

here is a tip passed on to me by a Pro.

"scuff the plastic ball with a grey pad as they are to slick from the factory"

MI 2 AZ generally missing left and right. Although at the moment a lot of balls seem to be sqirting right since theyve been having problems with the oiling machine.
I think its just I started to miss and then I stopped trusting myself.Things like youre going to miss this just pop in my head at the line and quess what I MISS.
I have been holding my average at around 190 by striking well. It has still  dropped a bit though.(still 3rd highest in my leagues)
I have a coach who thinks the same as me, no trust.
I can hit half a board with my strike ball, and even 1/4 pin on splits, but miss a single pin by 4 inches.
As for slipping it just never seems to sit securely on the palm of my hand on the backswing, too shiney maybe. May try a tape though, only ever used tape at the back before so may try a piece of white in the front.
I cant fathom it....
By the way thanks OmegaBowler, I do keep my ball very highly polished.May try that.

Spares?  What are those?

But in all seriousness, using plastic for spares can create a different feel for some people.  It also may require different targeting.

All equipment should be drilled to feel the same in my opinion...that includes using inserts and a slug in the plastic ball if you use them in your other equipment.  Just be extremely judicious with the superglue on the plastic ball so that you minimize the risk of cracking out.

For targeting, I draw my line from the shadow of the pin down the lane as opposed to targeting somewhere closer to the foul line.  It doesn't eliminate the problems of pushing or pulling a shot, but (at least for me) it does help with margin of error.  In some cases, I am actually targeting the pin itself...usually those are on the multiple pin conversions (I throw relatively straight at most of my spare attempts).

Michelle same system as I use in that I target the reflection of the pin, then draw it back and then throw through centre arrow for all spares.
It used to work very well..... but as with all things......

Are you hitting the center arrow?

First, put some white grip tape in the front part of your thumbhole so you can hang on to the ball.  If you feel like it is slipping off your hand (palm), try sanding the area that your hand touches to rough it up a bit.  If you are losing the ball off your hand or thumb, it will be difficult to release the ball consistantly and hit your target.  Oh, and do you use all 3 holes for gripping?

MI 2 AZ I do use all the holes, doesnt seem to help though.
As for accuracy I seem to be within 1 board most of the time but with my eyesight you never know.Occasionally I can be way off especially when I feel the ball move as I drop into the downswing.
I think its a case of losing complete confidence in my soccer ball.
I used to use a black zone sparkle and never had the feeling of an unsure grip with that but I gave that away so I cant give it another try.
I think what I'll do for now is to keep using the Red Pulse as I keep that very straight so long as I make a concerted effort to do so. If I hit a very dry lane then we'll see what happens.
I will give the soccer ball a slight scuff and give it a try in practice though.
Thanks everyone for time and sound advice.

Star,  let us know how that Soccer ball feels after you put some grip tape in the thumbhole and scuff the palm area.
