Problems Filling Bowling Leagues

I know usually every year about this time everyone is looking for that extra 1 or 2 bowlers to make their roster 6-7. This year Im noticing more and more teams are looking for new teams to bowl on because alot of last years rosters are not comming back. We actually totally lost a classic league on Wednesdays. I know economy is taking a part, but any other reasons?

is there a better bowling alley around people are going to?

We have 2 bowling alleys in town.  1 alley got bought and updated with really really nice things, the whole nine yards, while the other 1 is very outdated.  The older one hardly had any leagues last year and even less this year cause everyone is slowly moving to the "better" alley.  The older one puts out a better shot, but since the newness factor, everyone has switched to the newer one.

My Friday night mens league is down to 9 teams (house only has 12 lanes). This is the first time in 20 years (I've bowled in it for 7) the league has been around that it isn't full.

Seems to be a trend,
Wed night league - 7 teams
Thursday night league - 3 teams
Monday - 2 teams or more

Some have moved to another house but most have lost interest or have issues with the house owners not fixing or maintaining the house.

Vegas is dying in some league, my 5 man league is down to 8 returning so far and starts next week. It was 16 teams last year from 24 teams 2 years ago, pretty soon it will be gone.

Myself I have 2 job offers elsewhere and not bowling any leagues this year, just going to sub before i leave and then when I get to new town.

Just want to dump off stuff and move maybe 20-25 balls with me, under 100 balls now and getting there.

its prolly cuz the league was at an AMF house.... both AMF houses in my town are hurt'n for bowlers... doesnt help the linage is over 3 F'n dollars!!

- corporations (AMF and Brunswick in particular) are implementing many cost cutting mesures that affect league bowlers.
* Less cleaning means disgusting floors around settee and aproaches are filthy.
* Cheaper oil which seems to carrydown and does not hold up.
* They oil in the morning and never even touch up the oil for evening leagues. Resulting in some horrendous patterns if they can even be clalled that.

Those are specific things I see here in NJ.

- cost for leagues, even cheap mixed handicap, start at $20 and go skyward.

I don't see the cost cutting by AMF at our house as they have purchased a new oiler that the manager said cost $25,000. They are giving us free practice 3 games 1 night a week with the lanes set up with league shot. Also the manager is trying to get AMF to contribute $10 per team into the league prize fund. On a side note our leagues has lost 5 teams hopefull with what AMF is doing we will attrack some new teams

In one of my Senior leagues, where it's always been a terrible shot, they now have made it worse! We bowl at 1 pm on Thursday .. the night before lanes are oiled at 5:30 PM. A league bowls at 6:00 PM then another league at 9:00 PM. Then OPEN bowling till Midnight. On Thursday there's a 10:30 AM league which we follow at 1 PM. Believe it or not there's NO OIL since prior to the 6 PM league the night before.

This particular league I'm on has 20 teams of 4 bowlers per team. I think it's terrible but the league WILL NOT speak up!

Haven't really seen it here.  Most leagues are full before the season starts.  Most I've seen is one vacant team, or a couple of teams with 1 vacant bowler.

Our leagues are usually around $20, with $11-12 for lineage, $0.50-1.00 for secretary, and the rest goes to the prize fund.  I wish they were cheaper, and I wish they would be more flexible with the 35-36 weeks, but most of the houses I've seen are full just about every night of the week.

Management gets lazy is one reason.  Other reason, league bowling is not much of a priority. When a bowler has options (other centers to consider), they disappear if they feel their money is not appreciated by management of that center.

Wow!!!! You guys pay alot for bowling. I bowl in three house shot leagues, the most is twelve bucks. My two pba-x leagues are both fifteen. I guess I won't complain bout lineage anymore.

Most of our leagues are about $11 and some of our newer fascilities are $12.   For the lineage part of league fees.

Our Friday night was busted up (long story) last year. It formed 4 differant leagues out of that. The Friday league was 32 teams. 3 leagues in 3 diferant houses are Friday night the other went Monday. The Monday has 26 teams. 1 of the Friday leagues has 12 teams another has 24 teams. Not sure of the 3rd one. But just with those 3 it is an increase of 30 teams. These are 4 person teams btw.

As for the original query, I don't have anything to add.  Where I live (Vegas)
there are a lot of really nice, newer, state of the art houses and the compet-
ion for the bowling dollar is intense.  Leagues are enticed to move from house
to house and are frequently moving.  Day leagues are primarily senior leagues
(their movement is more stable) but of course they are constantly losing mem-
bers due to illness or death.  Night leagues are primarily 4 person mixed
leagues and will move anywhere where the best deal is.  There are scratch
leagues interspersed during both day and night.  But because of the economy
here, numbers are dwindling.
