I'm a lefty and my ring finger at the knuckle swells up and the pain is really bad.
A couple of years ago, I shortened my span and saw some improvements. My flexibility is not very good in that finger and someone though that I needed to go with more negative pitch in that finger.
Has anyone had this problem? If so, what have you done to cure it?

We used reverse pitch for the sore finger knuckle.
I would go ½ reverse or even more.
In fact I currently put ½ reverse in both my fingers for two reasons.
One is due to lack of flexibility.
Two was to keep from hitting the ball as much with my fingers.

wow, that sounds serious...i can't imagine throwing it such a way that would do that.
if that happened to me, i would get my grip remeasured by someone else and see if there's any huge difference.
if you injured that finger, you might have to simply rest it before throwing again.
good luck

I see this a lot at my local ball drillers shop, but mostly on the older people or people who come in with a ball that they have had for many many years. I would check your overall span to make sure it is still correct and yes some additional neg. in that particular finger is usually the cure. When fingers are placed in the ball and then the thumb is all the way in there should be no pressure on the back of the ring or middle finger nail side, the finger nail should not be scraping the back on the hole trying to come out. Sometimes the finger tip and nail will even become rounded down in that manner and this is a good sign a change needs to be made. I would talk with your local driller and try a slight pitch change in that finger. This can be done rather quick and easily by topping that finger in clear and simple redrilling the new pitch in.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.
Now that I am back and my Saws are sharp again, I am ready to cut some wood.

Hose, son of Sawbones,
You are posting this question here, to us, instead of THE SOURCE, and why?
Yes, negative finger pitch will help, but the real problem is
FWIW, I have had the same - swollen, inflamed tendons. Bad sign - need rest or cortisone shot; then negative pitches will help plus occassional advil/ibuprofen.
Oh, and too short a span is as bad as too long. Make sure that span is re-measured, as with age our bone/muscle/tendon/ligament structure(s) tend to change.

You really use your fingers? The way you fluff the ball? I swear, ya learn something every day - a dump and chuck lefty that uses his fingers.

No. It's Bones fault!!!
Hose,
Do you use inserts? changed type lately?
I tore the joint cap at the base of my ring finger several years ago. The symptoms leading up to that injury sounded just like yours. Since then, I use the grips with "bumps" in the middle finger - the smooth ones in the ring finger. And - I shortened the span 1/16th in the ring finger only. Takes a lot of pressure off the finger joints, but still allows me to keep fingers in the ball.
Good luch!

About 3 Yrs ago i had the same problem. Went to the doctor and he said Tendonitis so i got a
cortizone shot and took the summer off. Then just before the next season started went to my balldriller( insert plug) Randy Harvey in South Bend,In.
What we did was shorten the span and went with 1" reverse pitch, yes i said 1".
Have not had any problems with it since and i bowl 3 times a week and weekend tournaments. So i do bowl alot.
This change has not hurt my game at all. Last season i had 2 300's and 2 800's so it's working for me.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I have a similar problem that seemed like a dislocation or something. It is sore and I can't bend the finger totally to my palm any more. I have helped the situation by drilling another hole for my index finger to support the 16 lbs. I'm throwing around. I am getting a new Bully at 15 lbs. which might help also.

Mumzie hit it right when she said it is Bones fault.......
Hose, I was having a similar problem with the first joint of my middle finger. In discussing this with JohnP and Anne Marie Duggan whom has recently opened a pro shop here, they both suggested reverse pitch in fingers. Also less lateral pitch. I made this change 3-4 weeks ago. It worked. Finger is healing and pain going away. Hope this helps.

Are you still dating Brenda Lee? May just be overuse.

you've been CLEGGED, carrying Brandon's equipment has damaged your fluffing hand. Had a customer with a flexibility problem in the ring finger also, but he stood on the otherside of the ball. We went with a 5/16 away in the finger and solved his problem. Quit trying to carry all of Brandon's equipment in one trip!

As a matter of fact I am still seeing Brenda Lee. If things don't work out, I'll just marry one of my cousins in Lebanon
I asked Brenda Lee about my finger injury and she suggested that I soak it in cider
Tekneek, tooo funny. If I ever have to be Brandon Clegg's ball caddie, I'll never touch another ball again the rest of my fluffy life. Being bit%#$t slapped be Big Al was bad enough.
I did however beat Audric Bent once

Might try soaking it in "panty puddin".
Chris, do you know Jim Zack? Good friend of ours, use to live here in Marble FAlls, not sure whether he is still here or if he moved to Austin.
