Just my opinion
« on: November 08, 2004, 11:34:51 PM »
When I first joined this board it was full of helpful hints and tips, and was a great resource for any bowling advice that was needed.

And now then the leagues over there in the US have started, there is a lot of talk about how bowling is dead/dying and how it should 'be like the old days' and 'when I was a lad' talk.

you all should be talking about the future of bowling, not how we can make it like the past.

i agree monkeyboy.......you either adapt or get left behind. Afterall, what is so bad about "higher" scoring?? Its all subjective anyway. So what if a 190 bowler from the golden era is equal to a 225 bowler today???? Me, personally, I just like to bowl!!!!!!

Why ask Why???...Drink Bud Dry as the commercial used to say.

I wonder if there would be a way to take the "best of" posts and put them in the left link column....especially for the technical advice that gets re-asked over and over...

Scott, OverHand and Pinbuster, since you are all hacks, its difficult for a hack like me to offer any help. Perhaps those on this board who are not hacks can offer some help.

Sure they're some great bowlers that aren't hacks like us....but they are all under 18.

No Love, I believe that’s what we are trying to do.

Bowling has simply lost it’s respect.  A few years ago there was an article in the paper about a blind grandmother bowling a 300 game.  Recently a 10 year old boy bowled a 300 game.  The latest 900 series was shot prebowled, unopposed, unobserved.  The guy just turned in the paperwork saying he had done it.

When perfection becomes the norm instead of the exception integrity is lost.

People like to compare golf and bowling.  I haven’t heard of any hole in ones by 10 year olds.  Why not.  Mainly because in golf the standards remain the same.  They haven’t shortened the hole from 150 yards to 50, they haven’t made the cup 2 feet in diameter.  The fairways don’t funnel down into the greens.

I used to go to a tournament in Tennessee back in the 70s.  At the start of the team event bowlers with honor scores would be announced just to give them the recognition they deserved.  On a good day, there might have been one or two at the most in the entire field.

Fast forward to 2004.  I’m going to Vegas with a made up team of good air force bowlers.  Between us we have over 30 honor scores.

You don’t see anything wrong with this trend?  Look forward another 30 years, at this pace, what do you think scoring will be.  Note that I said scoring, not bowling.

Sure times change and we have to adapt to changes.  All us older bowlers want to see is a return to the days when a high average or an honor score was earned due to hard work and excellence in shot making.  Not because of the lane man.

Monkey Boy,

To summarize most people's observations, the future of bowling is to be found in the past. Accuracy and adaptability is and always will be the key to good bowling. The future as in the present has come to be focused on which ball will go the longest and give me to most flip and hook on the backend and in which center can I find the oil pattern to give me more than 10 boards of area at the arrows, so that my ball will still hit the pocket AND CARRY when I close my eyes, stand left and fling right (for righties).

Accuracy and adpatability have come to mean less and less, and luck and carry power and finding the right ball means more and more. When the number of times luck is the reason for winning gets so high, it almost makes no sense to enter tournaments, it's time to re-think the "game"/"sport".

Heck, even on the TV show, for the past XX years, we have been talking about "Fred" actually bowling/executing the betetr game, yet "John" won the tournament because he carried. Just the fact that we even consider talking about that subject means somehtign is wrong with this sport.

And, as Bones has said, if you have a problem, post a detailed question. It WILL be answered by someone.
