prodigy oil
« on: June 28, 2003, 02:30:15 AM »
has anyone bowled on kegels prodigy oil yet ? my house has switched to a 44' blended pattern with prodigy oil. the big advantage is that the oil is supposed to hold up much better and not carrydown. my own assessment is based on 6 games of open play today. i watched the lane man clean and oil the lanes with a phoenix "s" machine and then went to work. my brunswick monster frenzy( freshly wetsanded up to 2,000 grit and 2 full cycles in the lustrekleen machine ) allowed me to play a down and in shot around 8 with a HARD arc on the backend and great carry. after 6 games we went down to the backend of the lane and looked toward the heads and could not see any tracking made by the ball. we couldn't even see any tracking made from a 10 pin shot between the 4th and 5th arrows. i noticed no carrydown or breakdown based on my ball reaction. granted these results are based only on one bowler and do not represent two teams bowling on a pair but i'm impressed with what i saw.

Greg,

no matter what Kegel or LaneDynamx does for the bowling industry. NO OIL IN THIS WORLD WILL "PREVENT" CARRYDOWN! It will never ever ever happen.

This may delay the carrydown process, but it will occur. Does that mean that the backends will stay fresh? I doubt that. Why? Prodigy is a rather high viscoscity oil, there is no way to prevent carrydown. When this actually carries down the lane, I have a feeling that when experiencing carrydown with this kind of oil will be similar to that of our normal offense HV, LV, and other oils.

The companies are slowing down carrydown, but there is nothing they can do to prevent it 100% as we still have the open play bowlers who will push the oil down the lane with their polyester bowling balls.

Just an opinion.

I've bowled a few games on it, so I'm far from an expert. But - as far as I can tell, it seems to hold FAR BETTER than anything else.
In 6 games, I had to move very little, and noticed only a few effects of carrydown.
In the three game team event I bowled, with players all over the lane, my shot stayed relatively true.
My opinion - prodigy is a winner.

I have bowled two events on it...it did seem to hold up a little better and if you could get locked it, it didn't seem like you had to move every other shot.  I cannot speak to the open play environment.  I do know that at the end of the 3rd block at the open that the problems were not related to carrydown...and I was not too much farther left from where I started on the day I had the fresh.

Terre haute is not a good event for me to make a comparison because of having reinjured the hand...however, I could play in the evening close to a line that I tried in the morning practice before abandoning on a poor decision.

Playing where I like to play, it just seemed like the heads did not blow out as quickly as with some of the other conditioners.  But, like Kim pointed out, I am not ready to say that this is the shiznit without some more time on it...

We are switching in two weeks, after the installation of the Laneshield. So, I will have an opinion of both the new lane overlay and the new oil. On carrydown, we had little or no carrydown using  Defense, but tons of carrydown on Offense (if there were bowlers using non-flaring equipment). That seems to be the culprit for at least Offense. We see minimal carrydown on our Classic league, but no one is throwing plastic or urethane except one team and that is the only time we see carrydown. On Defense even against those guys we had none. What mechanics have told us is, after switching to Prodigy the out of ranges were totally elimated. These are largely caused by too much carrydown. One other thing that helped this problem is to use a good cleaner. The new oils bond better if the surface is properly cleaned and the best available is Kegels Fuzzion tablets.

My house owner is planning on putting out Prodigy for us to test out on in the near future, if it didn't already happen this past week.  Judging from my ball reaction this past week, something has changed, so he might have already put out the Prodigy.  We have been using Black Gold, then lately Black Gold HV, which seemed to be working out pretty well.....but the owner is always trying out the latest and greatest oils that hit the market, and he told me 2 weeks ago that he had a sample of Prodigy coming in.

If this past week was indeed Prodigy, then I can say that I'm not impressed with it.  The lane conditions this past week were extremely over/under, which is uncommon for this particular house.  And, we have been having virtually no carrydown problems with the Black Gold or Black Gold HV, but carrydown did become an issue this past week.  I'll find out for sure on Tuesday whether we are already playing guinea pig, or if last week was just a bad week for me.  If last week was indeed Prodigy, I hope that the owner decides to switch back to the Black Gold HV, because the entire houses' scores were down dramatically last week.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun here, but I'll know for sure Tuesday.
