does the ball matter

There are so many balls out there does it really matter?

I am interested in how many people have average increases consistently with a new ball.   With getting a new ball every year and your average goes up 10 pins every year eventually you will be averaging over 300.

My experience.  I have a gold pearlized quake. (not very pearlized anymore) I bought it back I think in '93-'94.   I took time off from bowling and started up again in 05'-06' and averaged 211 with it.   Last year I picked up a new ball for the first time in forever.  I averaged 220 with the morich awesome finish.

This year I just bought a black elite.  my first 300 and first 800 (804).

My goal is to average 235 this year.

Question.  Does the ball make the bowler, or does the bowler make the ball?

for the most part, its just like automobile preference, chevy, ford, toyota.  The only thing that really matters is the surface of the ball, pearlized, solid, dull, shiny but other than that

The answer is ... it depends.

Like your Quake. It was never meant to handle the oil in '05. But since it was so worn, "hardly pearlized any more", it was probably the equivalent of a solid in its reaction by 2005. And probably because of your skill level and the amount and type of oil pattern on which you bowled, a new ball might have made only 3 - 5 pins difference over all. There are tons of potential factors invovled.

The ball itself won't make you a better bowler.  You still have to execute.  However, matching up the right type of ball to the lane conditions can certainly make a huge difference.  If I try to throw my Spit Fire under any circumstances in my Tuesday league, I'll be pinging weak 7s and flat 10s all night long no matter what surface I put on it or what line I try to play.  But that ball absolutely kills on medium to light conditions on wood lanes for me.  It's probably going to be my go-to ball on Saturday league.

I can get to the pocket and sometimes carry well firing my plastic ball straight at the headpin.  But having the right ball for the conditions in my hands just gives me a much much greater margin for error and better carry.
