Professional Bowlers or Primadonnas?

With all the talk about fans making noise in the audience, I wondered if I was the only person thinking that the professionals that complain about noise in the crowd are ore akin to primadonnas than solid athletes. The truth is that they step on the approach, walk up to the line and throw  the ball.

Last I checked, noise has no impact on them walking to the line or rolling the ball. If not hearing is so important, they should put in ear plugs.

They are just looking for an excuse for their own failure.

Watch ESPN Classic when they show the PBA telecast back from the 60's and 70's! The spectators had a lot more respect for the competitors and the men wore suits and women wore dresses!!! I know time has changed and I started working in the bowling industry in the 70's and a lot has changed in 40 years!!! Not a sound was made when Earl Anthony, Dick Weber, or Don Johnson was on the approach!! Just my $.02, Bruce

Yea, go to a major golf tournament and see how much tolerance those pros have for crowd noise. Bowlers are tame in compared to golfers.

It is very different when the center is completely quiet. When there is noise, there is noise. When it is completely quiet and someone does somehting is seems quite loud.
When I won my first regional a few years ago, I needed a mark in the tenth the win. The place was completely silent. When I walked onto the approach, my wife was whispering to the person beside her. I could hear her and she was probably 15-20 feet from me. Big thing is, it should be out of respect to be quiet. Let the person throw the shot!!

It's not like league noise. These guys are making their living by bowling in a quiet environment on TV. Why do golfers want it so quiet? Are they primadonnas? Just hit the little white ball and collect your millions.

Professionals deserve respect.

Exactly guys!! Very well put!! I can practice all day around kids, but I'm not bowling for money then and the it's very different! Golfers want quiet so let's give it to professionals in all sports!!

They bowl all week with noise all around them. Much like most of us do during league play.

But the type of noise matters. If you were bowling in league and someone shouted your name out while in your approach it would probably bother you.

Since the environment is silent during the TV show, any noise created is magnified and creates a distraction.

I've always felt that if you wanted to bother a basketball player shooting free throws you should let the arena go dead silent and then as they go into their shooting motion ONE person in the stands could suddenly jump up and yell out the players name. I believe that would bother them more than the constant crowd yelling and waving.

I understand that quiet is the rule. I have a problem with blaming lack of execution on a noise in the crowd.  One thing that the pro should count on and expect is some in inappropriate sound. You have to be able to focus enough to not let that effect your shot. I think this is true whether they are in the first frame or the tenth.

I've always wondered why there's a silent environment on the TV lanes, or at any point during bowling. I see no reason that the crowd can't be rowdy as they would be during any other sporting event (save golf).

I feel silence is a greater distraction than noise and will encourage those next to me not to stop bowling if i'm on a string going into the 10th when people customarily won't bowl to allow you to 'concentrate'.

Psychologically this makes sense with state dependent learning as we don't practice in a vacuum, there is always abudant noise and the introduction of silence can easily throw one off their game. Whereas remaining in the same state as one practices (or bowls all week) has a higher degree of promoting comfort, calmness and the ability to perform (at a given task).

That may be the case, but I'm going to argue that not all primadonnas are professionals. 

Plenty of house hacks are just as bad, if not worse, when it comes to things not going the way they expect...

I would make the "refs" mad if I made a show. I'd work the crowd and make them get loud when I bowled. Noise helps me more than anything. Silence kills me. That's something I need to work on, but will never find in any bowling center at any time.
