Mediocre bowlers on Sport Condition shots
« on: May 18, 2004, 06:29:27 PM »
I was reading the "Why have sport condition leagues failed?" post and started to wonder about something.  There was a lot of discussion about why high average bowlers choose not to bowl on Sport shots, but I was wondering about the mediocre bowlers.

Do you think mediocre bowlers are scared off of Sport Condition leagues because they are afraid that they will bowl REALLY poorly on a Sport Condition, and they don't want the embarassment?

Let me just say that I haven't bowled on a Sport shot, so I don't know what the answer is to the question I'm about to ask; but I do have a guess, which I'll offer at the end.

My main question here is this:  What effect do you think a Sport shot would have on the average of the mediocre bowler, say someone with a 150 average?  Would it really make any difference?  It seems to me that someone with a 150 average is someone who is failing to take advantage of the scoring possibilities of the THS, so would such a bowler actually average less on a Sport shot?

Maybe not enough 150 bowlers join Sport leagues for there to be a reliable answer to this question, I don't know.  Any thoughts?

Shiv,
I average around duece, ....and I consider my self slightly above average

I love the sport shot! It proves who you are! Make quality shots or go home , or of course you could start drinking a LOT!

But,....I love it,...and woulnd't mind if regular league was a sport shot....

To a 150 average....depends on his style I would think...where his/her game is

I agree that at the 150 level and below I doubt lane conditions make that much difference. They have basic execution problems that will show up on most anything they bowl on.

The 170 to 190 bowler success will depend some on how they average what they do. If the live on strikes and die on spares then they will suffer more under the sport condition than the bowler who doesn’t strike much but can spare.

Most middle and lower range bowlers have enough issues to address without compounding them with tougher lane conditions. So I doubt they are really looking for sport leagues that much.

But in reality they should bowl them as it will effect the higher average bowlers more and give them a better chance while competing with them head to head.

Has anyone heard of a handicapped sport league? The only one I’m aware of around here is scratch.

You will find in the average adjustement chart that the lower the average the less effect there is on a lower ability bowler to maintain his scoring pace.

My winter sport league is scratch but last year the summer league was made a handicap league in order to expose more people to the concept of sport bowling.  No matter what level you bowl at, the more your game depends on lane help the greater your average will be affected.

House shot specialists have the most to lose on a flat (sport) condition. No bumber to throw the ball at. Lower average bowlers generally go more directly for the pocket and have less use for a ten board bumper.

Difficult to say, although I was paired with one of the dreaded headhunters over the weekend.  She was literally taking a Track ball (I believe it was a polished Threat) and maybe laying it down on 15, carrying a majority of what hit the brooklyn side of the head pin.  She had two balls on her ball card and neither was the best alternative for the condition we had...unfortunately, because of how she threw the ball it was almost exactly like following the leagues of people throwing plastic dead up the gut.  To watch her, I would guess maybe 175 and dependent on strings of strikes and very dependent on lane conditions for any ball reaction.  That sort of a bowler does not see the real gap between the THS and sport-compliant conditions

Much of the problem in getting people to bowl on sport-compliant conditions are that it is not explained to them how it will help their game.  If someone just goes out and tried to throw the ball week in and week out, they will not benefit from sport-compliant conditions.  However, if someone wants to hone their game, and is willing to put their ego aside and actually try to learn new tricks, then the sport-compliant conditions could be viewed more favorably.  It is incumbent upon the associations to explain the benefits to their members and as we know, many associations do not do anything of the sort.
