How to attack a lane? - I get some...
« on: September 11, 2008, 08:10:57 AM »
... experience!

To understant I need to tell you the story first:
Last Thursday the oiling machine (kegler something etc. ) had some "damage" and some oil was missing.... was fun playing those lanes... really difficult

In fact a new employee filled the middle oil tank not with oil but with the cleaner used for the approaches *breaks out with laughter*
Still fun to see all the "good" players struggle while trying to adjust to those lanes... there was oil! it was just demanding a high precision to play thos lanes

so...

Today that machine was already fixed and guess what? The oil that was "missing" last Thursday seemed to be layed out additionally today.
The staff told me it could be... because they didn't change the pattern "of course!" ... well he told me it could be that the machine as it was also cleaned several times... now the oil is given more "fluidly" or something.
So all balls skidded through!
I fought the lanes... didn't get the ball to the pocket (friend of mine with the same problem)

The only way was to slow down!
That was the first thing to do.

then there were two possible lines to play:
down on the outter 5 boards and let it get to the pocket (Let'S call this line A)
keep it tight and send it over the middle out towards the the pins slightly over the pocket to have the ball hook back the last few boards into the pins (let's call this Line B)

So... let's talk about line B first:

I tried several different hand and wrist position and found for all kinds of releases that any missed ball either skidded too far --> washout
ior when missed in left a nast split etc.

It was possible to play tight but needed a lot of accurace in breakpoint (this means: hit your spot with the right release angle and speed...)

I could not score well on that line

Now let's talk about line A:

same problem excpet that any miss out meant a gutter

Scoring was slightly higher for me but any wrong released ball skidded through leaving a washout
missed in was 50:50
brooklyn meant strike or single pin..
Nose shot meant BAD split (4-6 4-6-7 etc.)

So:
How do you get the right tactic to play a lane?
Is it pure experience? ... luck?
Honestly... I am doing bad right now... btu I get the hang on my game and release adjustment are really working out.
I plan to train that... I can increase hook by 5 boards from a "weak-forward roll release) to a more sideroll release
I can also influence the way the ball rolls... rolls or skids more.

timing is a problem.... but strategy seems to be very important..

So any advices?
right now I have no real arsenal... though I am working on it...
So I need to rely at least on my (not really existent ) experience and ability to adjust and more important to find a working line fast...
It took me at least 1 game to judge if that line in combination with release and speed was good or not so good.... now that is too slow!
Any advice?

is this a real THS anymore.... I see no "wall"... no easy play there.... send it out too far and bye bye.... pull it in and you get a split at worst...
THS for me is different

For what it's worth, it sounds like you had less trouble finding where the line to the pocket was than you did just repeating shots.  Your accuracy in general sounds iffy, and the way your hand comes out of the ball from shot to shot sounds like it varies a fair bit.  Having hold room inside and hook outside masks these problems a little bit, but as soon as the pattern is flatter, your mistakes are amplified.

I think the two best options for solving this:  keep it simple, and practice the right way.  First off, don't try to get too fancy with your release -- keep your hand snugly in the ball and just let it roll down the lane.  Don't try to make it hook a ton, don't over-think and over-complicate it!  Just use the release that feels comfortable that you can repeat over and over again.  Also, get that arm swing nice and loose and free and work on some accuracy drills.  Stand right on top of the 10 board and try to throw your plastic ball dead straight up that board -- don't worry about what the ball does at the pins, just try to hit the same board over and over again.  Then pick a target out away from you so you have to swing it to that spot.  Again, try to hit that same target over and over again with your plastic ball.  The key is to do less aiming with your arm and do more of the aiming with your body.  If you can turn your body slightly toward your target at the foul line, you have to work less to get your arm going in the direction of your target.  Again, the more simple you keep things, the easier it is to repeat them.  Muscle memory is everything when it comes to repeating shots, so you need to just practice, practice, practice drills that stress accuracy until you truly feel comfortable with it.

If you find your accuracy and still want more room make some surface adjustments to your equipment to fine tune your reaction and just stay slow.  I would opt too play the outside line when making the surface adjustment because you will be able to play more down and in and you wont be looking for as much reaction.
