promoting tougher conditions?
« on: September 09, 2012, 11:48:36 AM »
I guess it's more of a curious question. Since a lot of people say they want to toughen up the lane conditions..  Not to make them super hard, but somewhere around a Kegel Challenge tough..

But i am curious as to how many people actually try to get people to bowl on tougher lane conditions?  Or to get their league to bowl on a tougher lane condition??

Patterns are only hard when you havent bowled on them and once you get use to balling on them you will repeat the same statement. ( Tougher conditions ) Bowling manufactors will make a ball that will elimate the real challenge..  Technology is the real problem but who balls using Urthane or rubber balls..  Even back then I heard of people putting coins and etc inside the cores of the balls to help with reaction...

jmo, the person who averages 175 probably doesnt know if the lanes are tough or not...   you could make the lanes easier for said person and he might!  average 190... why???  because is spare game sucks...

Twohand said it best...  It's not about lowering the John Q's average which is the 150-180 range...   its about lowering the upper tier guys, who are 215 to 240...

Which all may be true, but just the thought or idea of bowling on a tougher condition will make the bowler bowl bad or worse than they are used too. Maybe this is why the people do not want to bowl on a tougher pattern, because it is stated as such. Istead of saying, "hey we changed the pattern in such and such way," which in reality makes it flatter and/or longer, bowlers say "this THS is cake, it the bunny slope of bowling. We need to toughen it up to a Kegel Challenge Series shot."  I am sure that immediately puts the fear into bowlers who do not bowl a lot or have no clue on what you are talking about.

I have tried in the past. I listened to an end of year league meeting getting very heated over handciap. There were big differences in team average between low and high teams. It was huge! The discussion was getting no where.

I brought up making the condition a little more tough. It would reduce the gap between the teams' averages. As soon as the words were said "averages will be lower"...forget it. No one was going to second it.

Tuesday night mens league last season had a honor score every week. From someone throw a 300 or 2, or an 800 set. Out of 60 bowlers, there were I think at least 20 that ended with a 220 or higher average. With the high being 245.
They decided to make the shot "tougher" this season to try and make it a challenge again. Since the league has started three weeks ago. There have been three teams say they will quit, and two league meeting for them to discuss how easy they want to make the shot.
Bottom line, you can never make everyone happy. If you are on a social league, it should not matter how easy the shot is. Drink a beer and have a good time. If it is a money league, they should have a tougher condition to bowl on. I think you should have to work a bit to get some money.

Funny, I take off a couple years and go from averaging 212 to 174 .Before I avg 191 on a sport shot. Now i start getting reactions from 20-30 feet on the inside.I Use urethane, set at 50,try to swing 20-18 at arrows, but it stops at 10 at 40-45 ft and ends up bryklyn unleless i go straight up,then my carry goes to 15%
Get rid of THS. Sport shot rules!

back to it,

i noticed your post about "no oil" and with your slow ball speed and revs, your going to get that reaction on any clean backend...

if the oil pattern was longer i am sure you wouldnt have that type of reaction.

Also try starting with the ball higher in your stance.
