As usual, I went home for lunch today and turned on ESPN to catch Sports Center. Well, instead of that, they were broadcasting the national spelling bee.......IN HD! Explain to me why the PBA is still shown in crappy standard def when a bunch of kids spelling words no one has ever heard of is shown in high def? Pathetic.

But Ssssppppeeellliiinnnggg is a sport

Even boxing is shown in standard def on ESPN, yet spelling bee gets high def. I can't explain it either.

I totally agree with you. The trouble is networks go by ratings. Unfortunately, bowling has a poor rating. I don't know what should be done to improve that. I'm a bowling addict myself and I find deplorable that we don't have more bowling on TV.

Its hard to beleive they are still televising that spelling bee on ESPN.. Seriously, who watches that except the familes of the kids on there.. Sorry, but this as far from a sport as you can get IMO..
I also agree on the HD thing, why would we need the spelling bee in HD?? That makes zero sense..

The spelling bee is a one time thing. The PBA is every week for however many weeks.
Winnercomm produces the shows and I'm pretty sure the PBA is paying the bill to broadcast it. I doubt if they want to invest on the cameras and other equipment to produce a true HD broadcast.
