Proper fit

When measuring for proper span how do "you" determine span length. I know everyone has their own methond, just curious to see new ideas. Also i am interested in fitting for grips and with out grips.

I don't think this is what you mean but I'm wondering what the reference point is that people use for a correct span.  Is it 1/4" from the first knuckle or half way between the first two knuckles?  Some people probably still use the former but it seems like most are using the latter these days, I could be wrong though.  This is for fingertip span of course.

So for someone with small hands the 1/4" would be closer to relaxed, where someone with bigger hands could be pretty stretched.  Right?  I had thought the halfway reference was the way to go.
