15 or 16 lbs
« on: February 25, 2010, 05:21:35 AM »
I know this topic probably has been discussed before but I've been having shoulder problems and have been thinking of dropping weight to 15lbs. I know there is alot of people and pros now using 15lbs. what are the advantages and disadvantages changing weights. My big concern is I have pretty high ball speed already and don't want to increase that any and until I get everything changed out could I switch back and fourth.

Personally, the main difference I've noticed between the two is that with 16lbs I can actually feel the ball in my swing. My problem with 15 is that since I couldn't feel the ball in my swing I had horrible speed control and it would lead to numerous other issues.

Throw what feels best to you. In the end the difference in carry is negligible.

"The framers of our Constitution believed that if the people were to be sovereign and belong to different religions at the same time then our official religion would have to be no religion at all. It was a bold experiment then as it is now. It wasn't meant to make us comfortable, it was meant to make us free."

Unless you throw a ton of ball with massive revs, 15 lbs will not carry as good as 16.

Unless you have good control of the ball, are comfortable throwing it, and are able to repeat shots properly, 16# won't carry as good as 10#.

It's not about weight, it's about being able to control the ball and feel comfortable throwing it.  14#, 15#, and 16# for virtually every performance ball out now have the same dynamic core.  They will all carry just fine.  Carry is different with different weights, but it's more a case of how the ball enters the pocket than the weight of the ball.  14# may deflect more on high hits than 16#, carrying the 9-pin.  16# may drive more on light hits, carrying the 5-pin.  When you change weights, you may need to adjust how you put the ball in the pocket, but you can carry with any of the higher weights just fine.

fish I also had shoulder problems and finally made the decision to go down to 15 lbs.  My scores had been a little off and they are actually coming back up.  I have not noticed any carry issues throwing 15 lbs. versus 16 lbs and my shoulder feels much better which has allowed me to throw more comfortably and accurately in the third game.  Ironically my scores had been falling in the third game and now my third game is usually my highest score.

Good luck.
