Pros/Cons of Opening a Shop in this Economy
« on: February 27, 2013, 08:58:14 PM »
I've always thrown around the idea of opening my own shop and be my own boss and work for myself. I've also wondered about opening a shop inside a shopping mall. Idk what rent goes, if it would be worth it, but since there is no proshop space available where Im at, I was just curious. I think it's a good idea bc while they are waiting for their equipment, they can go around the mall, etc.

even though its a hobby and doesn't seem like work, something about putting in 60 hrs a week for $35k/yr salary (maybe?) doesn't appeal to me....

Who said anything about money. It's more than a hobby to me. If I make as much as I do now but do what I love to do, I'd change that in a heartbeat. Not everyone makes 35k a year doing what they love. I make that much now but I hate what I do day in and day out, same thing day after day. I love the sport if bowling and always been my dream to have a shop or a bowling alley.

Whatever works as long as you love what you do.  I loved working in a pro shop when I did for almost 4 years out of college.  I hated never having any money after covering my bills, food and league dues.  Plus it was very hard to transition professionally afterwards into the corporate world.  To each his own.  If money isn't an issue, and it's your dream it should be a no brainer.  No one here can/should stop you.

Depending where you live, mall rent can be very expensive.  A small store in the malls by me can run around 5,000-6,000 a month.

It all depends on your market. I know where I live it would not be worth going into a shopping center or anywhere like that due to the expense of the rent. Then you need to look at would you be able to get the business to support your location. Being out of a bowling center it would be hard to do, but it also depends on your market. All you can do is look into cost of everything and then figure out if you think it would be worth to try.
You stated no pro shop space is available. Is that they have people running them or are they rented out and a private person running it? If it is just the center running maybe see if you can cut a deal to rent it out. Another option there, that would put you in the center with established league bowlers in every night.

Coming up on 3 years of running our own shop after working in shops for years previous. The one thing I would warn you is, if you are doing it full time to pay your bills it will quickly become a job and lose some of the fun. Honestly my brother and I have good paying day jobs and even still it has lost some of the enjoyment as the buck stops with you.

Instead of handing off customer complaints to the owner you have to deal with them yourself....sometimes at a loss even if it isn't necessarily your fault. I still enjoy having a guy walk in and setting them up with a new fit, in a good ball, and watching their face light up like it is an all new game. But there are many things that take some of the fun out of it.

When you look at the clock and you "have to" go to the shop it starts being a job and then it isn't just a hibby anymore. Just sayin'

The honest truth is running a proshop is a long, hard grind.  There is money to be made for the right person in the right location.  Those locations are few and far between and usually already taken.

If it's your dream, truly a hobby, and you don't need the income to survive, do it.  I wouldn't do it in a mall though.  You wont find anybody buying bowling equipment in a mall.
Long Gone also posts the honest truth which is why i respect him. He posts these things knowing some may not like it.

I had an opportunity to own a shop around here and decided against it. I know you love the game now but after you spend 60 + hrs in a shop after a few years it will eat away at your love for the game. I used to want to bowl every day and loved bowling. Now after spending 40 hours a week in the shop for a year and a half i pretty much hate bowling. I still enjoy the technical side of it but i just don't enjoy the game much. I have since cut back to only 10 hours a week in the shop and i at least find enough enjoyment now to practice a little but still don't think i will ever enjoy bowling as much as i did before i worked in the business. I can't say i regret it because I've met a lot if cool people because of it and I've learned a lot but i really do miss being able to enjoy bowling......also don't think the mall idea would ever work. Too expensive and you would still be paying that rent all summer with no income....

I concur with the above post.  I've bowled one full season, 4 games a week since I left the proshop business in early 2009.  The downside, like others have said is after struggling enough financially and the burn out from working 60+ hours a week, your work/life balance will suffer and you will eventually lose the love for the game.  Being away for a few years has kind of rekindled my interest in coming back next season, but I still wouldn't want to work in a shop full time.  I would love to have my own equipment in my house to drill for myself.  That's another avenue you might want to think about.  Make it a hobby shop and not a profession and I'm sure you will love it a lot longer.

I agree with you 100% about going to work to a job that you hate, because you have to work to survive. If you can do what you want to do and make money at it, then I would do it in a heartbeat. But like others have stated, hopefully it will not end up just being a job. I personally don't think a mall is the place to open a shop either. The average customer will not even come into your shop. Bowlers are at the alleys, so I would look  at that option if you can, for obvious reasons, seeing the person throw the ball to help in the layout and the way the ball motion is to help in deciding what ball they may want. If you can do this with making a living I applaud you, I just don't think it will be enough $ by itself, but I wish you luck, and I hope you can pull it off.

If you don't "need" it to pay the bills & think you can make it work, then go for it & follow your dream.  A lot of very successful have failed first...  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

That said, this is a tough time, economy & state of bowling wise, to be investing in getting a small business started...  If you have a base of clientele & know they are in the market for buying balls &/or plug & re-drills, surface changes, &/or rejuvinate/re-surface, then go for it.

One thing I agree with another poster about is that I wouldn't put it in a mall... If you do, hopefully it's next to/near the bowling alley. Those are mostly women, clothes shopping for themselves or kids & teeny boppers "hanging out"...

If you do go with the mall idea, look for a vacant rental near the most male traffic. Food courts, sporting goods, jerseys & hats stores, memorabilia, etc...

Other wise I'd recommend a location nearest to a bowling alley where your base would be bowling.  If it's not a far drive to the alley, people would be more likely to pop in.  Knowing they could pick up their ball & hop, skip over to the lanes & try it out... They have an issue, you are just a short skip back for them.

If you aren't doing enough business to make a reasonable profit, why would you need to be in the shop for 60 hours a week? Unless it's a condition of your lease of course.

My local pro shops are open 6 days a week from 12 to 7 and closed on Sunday. Both shops do good business and make the owners a decent living.
