Proshops Like and Dis likes
« on: September 04, 2008, 03:46:24 PM »
I was wondering what all of you like or don't like in a pro shop. It seems that this topic comes up a lot in conversations and was wondering what some other people think. What makes you go to a shop or not go to a shop

I go to Tim Mauthe in Appleton WI. I go to him because he is honest and he will tell me if the ball, drill pattern, Surface or anything else I wanna do is a bad idea. He is very patient and courteous to all who come in the shop, He thinks of his coustomers before he thinks of himself, comes in to do balls up on his days off. That is what I like in a pro shop ownwer and he is the darn ball driller anywhere around. And one of the coolest guys I have ever met.

What I don't like is pro shop owners who sit behind their computer and play online poker while some one else drills the balls up. guys who will sell anything they can to make a profit regardless of weather it is right for the person buying it. Guys that close their shop at the busiest time of the day because it is inconveinent for them to be open at that time, or people that don't talk to you becuase you are not spending your money in their shop.

I go to Rich Eighme in Waterloo, Ia. The main reason is if what I want to do is something he does not agree with he will tell me. Then he will make suggestions as what I might need. More than once I was set on a certain ball and he recommends some thing else. Usually it is a lower priced ball. He makes his recommendations on my type of lanes. Since due to my work schedule I usually bowl on sunday only.

I like pro shops where I receive respect - as a bowler as well as a customer.
My pro shop guy of trust listens to my needs or ideas about how to set up a ball, and makes corrections and suggestiosn. I have never been "talked" into a certain piece of equipment, and it is even no problem to bring balls to have them drilled or plugged. And: he does a very good job.

On the other side, I consulted other local shops, and the staff there either did not listen or even tried to rip me off! There is so much rubbish going on in pro shops... probably bold self-overestimation of the guys who run their spare time business and look for the easy extra money.

Be happy when you have someone on the drill who knows what he/she does and who takes care of his/her customers!

I like pro shops where I receive respect - as a bowler as well as a customer.

Their is a pro shop in my area that does this part, but the service/work isn't always done when promised and I use it once in a while depending on my needs, but I mostly use a pro shop that has a guy that has no personality at all, acts like he could care less, ask him a question and he just sits/stands there and looks at you saying nothing and offers little if any help/suggestions while a customer looks at the balls on the wall.....Why do I use a pro shop like this????.....Because his drilling accuracy in terms of span and pitches is the very best of all of the shops in this area. There is one other driller in this area (Mike Austin) that could exceed him though, but he doesn't run a pro shop any more.

Southern Oklahoma when we first came here was like the middle ages.  The Pro? Shop was absolutely terrible.  They were not finishing or coloring ball plugs and the quality of work was bad. When the plug was colored they used craft paint or food color dyes to do it. My bench is FULL with repair jobs of other peoples work from all over the area.  I had one ball come in that someone had sanded the labels completely off a new ball to repair lane damage.  The big topics I hear are:  The Pro Shop I've been using doesn't listen too me, the guy drills it like he wants it not the way I want it.  my ball hurts my hand and/or arm and the best one I like to hear when I handle a customer is:  The ball driller I've been using doesn't do all this?  what are you doing?  Then I explain.   Quality craftsmanship is now here!!!

Smash,

I left out the plug work in my topic. The plug work of the excellent driller I go to is also top notch and I haven't ever had a problem with it, whereas the other shop that treats customers better with respect, doesn't do as good of plug work and many times in the past that I have had balls plugged there, it  starts cracking and falling out of the ball. I just wish the other shop that you feel more welcome in could perform the same type quality work as the shop I go to.

LOL   Unfortunately I have known many ball drillers that have the personality of a wet roll of toilet paper or needed anger management counseling. Sounds like the nicer people need to prep a little better.  Some of it may be training.
