PSO
« on: October 14, 2016, 10:36:15 AM »
Back in bowling after almost a year and a half off and I'm re-assessing everything, including my PSO.  He's quite reputable, but I want to make sure my experiences with him are at least somewhat typical in the bowling world.  He's very insightful and skilled, but after I get a ball drilled I often have mixed feelings about the experience.

Two questions: 1) When you drop off a ball to get drilled, on average how long does it take before it is ready for you?  Assuming nothing crazy happens like the drill press dies or something.
2) How often is it that you feel the PSO did something wrong?  Drilling related (messed up span or wrong layout, etc.) or customer service related.

Orders go out on Friday and its in and ready within a week. Week or so turn around on dropped off balls. Hardly ever a mistake made that I'm aware of at least. Great customer service, as he replies within hours for any bowling related questions I message him.

1. same day, unless I have to go somewhere....like back to work.

2. a) I give the PSO 2 chances to get it right when it comes to my grip. then I leave the POS and look for another PSO.

b) when it comes to customer service.... If my first experience sucks, I leave the POS and go to another PSO.

When I first moved here to my current City 12 years ago, I was like Leonard Nimoy - "in search of" a PSO. I went to 4 places in sactown and they all sucked in different ways. From drilling to customer service. I never returned to these shops and bowled with wrong pitches in several of my equipment. But I wasn't as serious about bowling since I was focused on something bigger.

Then I found itsallaboutme, he flat out fixed my equipment, drove badass car gave me sh*t... lol nah he's a cool dude and everyone here misses him.

Anyway, good luck and communicate with your PSO, I'm sure he'll try to make it right...

My PSO guy will drill a ball while I wait or during the time it takes for me to drive to his shop if I want/need it quickly. It's very, very rare that I request this as I have more respect for his time than to request immediate service when it's not needed.

But usually I just call him(or leave it with him if I'm bringing the ball in) and he will drill it when he has available time.

What are you having mixed feelings over?

Are your expectations of the ball too high or are you underwhelmed by the service you receive?

Mostly I feel like he considers me a second-class customer that 1) can wait longer for a ball (he has no concept of first come, first served), 2) he doesn't need to remember our conversations because he knows what "people like me" want.  Here are some examples of what I'm talking about:

The average wait time for a ball for me is about 2-3 weeks.  He will tell me a specific day it will be done, which is usually in about 3 days, but it just keeps not getting done because he has a bunch of preferred customers he takes care of right away while I have to wait in line.

I took a Warlock XV to him with a specific dual angle layout I wanted.  When I finally got the ball he told me he drilled it differently because he didn't think the layout would work well, but he never bothered to let me know beforehand that he was changing it.  Not even a phone call, and I was working at the bowling center his store is at.

Last year I got my hands on an undrilled Granite Gargoyle I wanted to use for the city tournament.  Once again, I gave him a specific dual angle layout I wanted to use and he drew it on the ball.  A month goes by, during which I kept touching base with him and it's still not ready.  The day before the tournament I call him and tell him it needs to get done today, because as we had discussed I wanted it for the city tournament.  He tells me it's next on the press, long and strong, pin above the bridge, just like I wanted (which was nothing like the layout we had discussed, which was 1 1/4" Pin to PAP, waaaaay to the side of my grip).  I get him to fix the layout and he tells me he'll bring the ball to the desk when he's done since I'm working there all night.  Ball doesn't get done until an hour before the tournament the next day.

I bought 2 Brunswick Slingshots through him once to see how 2 different layouts on the same ball would affect the motion.  We chose the layouts together, and he ordered specific top weights for each one.  Later on I took one to nationals.  Despite having him double check everything to make sure it was legal before I left, the officials told me the weight hole was too big (he actually said it was a freaking crater and was too big to be fixed in time).  I wasn't thrilled.

Three weeks ago I took him a new spare ball, a(nother) Brunswick Slingshot, and a VBP Purple Executioner.  No specific layouts, just generally long and strong on the Slingshot and control drilling for the Executioner, and ITs in all three.  I get the balls, there is no IT in the spare ball (even though he specifically asked me if I was sure I wanted to bother with it), and the other two balls are both the same: pin 1" above the ring finger, cg kicked 30* or so, weight hole 4" dead right of the ring finger (I'm not 100% sure I should be annoyed about this one, but it feels like our conversation went in one ear and out the other).  Furthermore, I still use the pinky hole I used when I was a no-thumber, but he didn't drill that in any of the balls, even though he has it listed on my spec sheet in his system.

I'm not here to flame the guy, and he is really good when he feels like it, I guess.  I've never had a span or pitch problem, and when we discuss a new layout together he has some really interesting ideas of things to try.  I'm just trying to figure out if I want to try to find another PSO in NorCal.

Yes, find another PSO.  There's no excuse for the problems you've encountered.  --  JohnP

You should flame him. He might be good, but he's not good to you. My pso is my friend of 15 years and I get perks there, and I don't even get treated that bad. If I want something, I go, lay it out after he orders it, or I lay it out when I bring it in, he puts holes in it as I've asked by when I need it, and that's it. He never deviates from what I've laid out, and he knows the two layouts I use. I wouldn't expect him to come up with something exotic like a MoHole, but he's smarter than he lets on. Just doesn't exercise his knowledge since he drills for a bunch of house bowlers.

Yep. Sounds like he doesn't really care about you or what you think at all. Not drilling a ball how you want, and changing things up after what was agreed on without letting you know is an egregious overstep of the line. I would have dropped him after the first instance of that happening.

And two to three weeks is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for a ball to be drilled, especially if he says it will be done in a few days (which would be a completely reasonable timeframe).

You can do better.

No excuses for the layout stuff if the conversations went as you said.

As for the chutes and ladders system of getting things done, if you are getting any kind of discount don't expect any type of urgency, but weeks are unacceptable.  If you are paying full price then your stuff should be in line like everyone else's.

Wow, I would have gone nuclear on this guy.  My PSO knows me, my game, and what I like. I don't even bother asking about the layout anymore, it's always exactly what I was looking for.  Everything is always done on time.

Wow.  You are much more patient / understanding than most of us.  The first time, I was given a timing and it was missed...OK, maybe something came up.  The next time, I'd be done..  clearly a pattern here!

On the layouts and I'm going to give you want I want attitude, I would have refused the ball and demand a new one is ordered and drilled correctly..  In my opinion, that's absolutel BS.

Look elsewhere...in my opinion.

go elsewhere. communication is big and basically he not telling you about the layout changes,
just shows how important you are to him. you're not.
