High Track - Low Track
« on: February 22, 2004, 08:35:38 AM »
In the rubber and urethane days, I was a high tracker, track about 1/2 in wide, about 1/2 in from thumb, 3/4 from fingers.  Today, with the resin and particle stuff I have, my track has moved to about 1 1/2  to 2 in from the thumb and 2 to 2 1/2 in from the fingers (i.e. on the first oil ring).

What release changes have I made to change the track location?  Is higher or lower track better today?  In the hard rubber days, I understood a high track was best.

BTW, my lowest flaring ball is an old polished Storm Hot Shot, CG in the palm, Pin just below the ring, and using that ball to set my PAP, I am 5 1/8 over, 3/8 up, which indicates a fairly high track.

I'm confused.  Does the higher flaring stuff lead to lower track?  ??????

Higher the track the more surface of the ball is used and the earlier it hooks and the opposite for a lower track.  Other than that I'm not completely sure if one is better to have than the other.  I'm assuming a high track would do better in heavier oil and a lower track in lighter but I could be wrong.

DOconTEX,

This is generally not something to worry about. Yes, higher flare balls will, vaguely and in general, produce tracks that can start further than we may like to see from our thumb and finger holes. Lower flare balls will generally (not all the time) will produce a track closer to the finger & thumb holes. Also pins closer to our track will produce higher tracks.

A 5 1/8" PAP is just fine & dandy; by the way, you'll find that PAP is just a good approximation AND that is all you need. There are much more important bowling concepts to worry about, like timing and release consistency and watching the transition.
