Pulling the ball as I play deeper
« on: October 20, 2009, 08:28:17 AM »
This seems to be a problem that has been giving me issues lately as I work on my game. If I have to play a shot that forces me to set myself up with shoulders parallel to the foul line and my target at most 3 boards left or right in line with my breakpoint, I'm fairly acurrate a good portion of the time.

The problem arises when I have to move deeper or when my breakpoint changes, either by my choice or depending on how the lane transitions, 5 or more boards right of my target. This results in pulled shot to the inside 70-80 percent of the time.

In short basically anytime I don't set up with my shoulders parallel to the foul line, I pull my shot most of the time whether it's for strikes of spares. I can set up decently, but once I go deliver my shot, the result is a pulled shot instead of the shot my set up is suppose to give me.

I read ron's getting deeper article: http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/tip24.htm
but he mentions only how to set up properly and where to aim, but I still pull the shot even after setting up properly for getting deeper.

It's really affecting my consistency and if you can help me figure it out would really help my game to a new level.

Thanks for the tips

I don''t think throwing the ball faster is a problem because I''m not a speed dependant bowler.  Speed is my problem so I''m hoping to fix it soon.

I''ve tried looking at my break point and then my target at the arrows but for some reason that works on my spares but not my strikes.

Same thing with opening up my shoulders.  Inconsistent results.

However the best results seem to be if I release early.  I am able to play a line left to right if I release early but it tends to be too much and wildly inconsistent as well.  In addition for some reason, it messes up my spares.

What can you make of this? It''s so difficult to make the ball move left to right toward my break point.  I''m just at a lost on what to do.

Also how would I set up If I have to play an extreme angle for hitting the pocket?  I talking about when the lanes are dry enough you''''re standing near the ball return and have to play a shot that goes toward the gutter and comes back.

Here's a combination recommendation from Randy Petersen and Norm Duke.
Randy Petersen:  point your toes slightly toward the direction you want the ball path to be, open your shoulders but during your down swing, lower your throwing shoulder below your non throwing shoulder.  For me right handed, as my swing comes down, I am lowering my right shoulder, my left shoulder slightly higher helping me project the ball right.  randy even said this on television Sunday, this is in contrast of what we have learned from years of being told to keep our shoulders paralell during the arm swing.Keeping the shoulder paralell works grea for down and in, but to move left and swing right, dip the right shoulder (right handed bowlers, opposite for left handed bowlers)

Norm Duke: This also helps with increasing ball speed.  Right handed bowlers, left handed bowlers this is opposite.

After pushawayand during the backswing get the left hand/arm in front of youso your left arm is in front of you your chest is almost perpindicular to the line and your backswing will be much easier to get higher and it automatically has you in an open position.

What happens to a lot of bowlers that I coach is that they want to swing their off hand/arm around too much and too fast pulling their body around again making their shoulders paralell to the foul line causing them to pull the ball.  I recommend watching Norm duke bowl and at home just stand there and put your non bowling arm out to the left and slightly behind you and you will see how this pulls your body around and tightens you upper body.

Good luck.
