Why can't we just change balls?!?!
« on: November 30, 2005, 01:43:26 AM »
If you've been bowling for awhile, you know when to put the ball away, and pull out the next one. Like last night for me. First game, 180, well below average. I fought the lane and ball of choice for an entire game. Second game, 236. Pull out my old faithfull Original Inferno (thanks again fufu!) The shot was perfect for it, and everything was great. Third game, 198. Started out with the front 5, then oops. My ball hit the pocket, thought I have 6 in a row, then bang a big split. My Inferno started to roll out and burn up a little.

But of course, I couldn't tell myself to change balls, it had to be my release or some other lie we tell ourselves. So I have 2 more opens/splits in a row, change balls and go 9/9/X to end the game. The two 9/'s just missed carrying to end with a 3 bagger. Ahh, the joys of bowling.

This was way longer than I expected, sorry. lol

I also tend to hang on too long on a ball... especially in league when I try to play conservatively. There is the fine line between the good feeling of the ball which starts to burn up and leave splits, and the risk of another ball, finding a new line, different grip feeling, other speed etc.

Currently, I observe my ball reaction very closely. Upon first sign of trouble (especially after the 2nd split in 3 frames...) I make a courgeous change of equipment to the next-weakest ball I have.

Took some time to figure out what works and complement. Normally, I started out with my Eliminator drilled for roll, and was then able to switch to a Vicious Attack with a sheen surface and a backend drilling. For both balls I was able to use the same line, and the VA would set in where the Eliminator gave up. Just a 1 or 2 board adjustment at the approach. But without this knowledge and the confidence in the quipment, I would not take such "drastic" measures.

Now, with a new Shock & Awe, I might be able to stay in play for longer, but that's still a research topic.

What we see most of the time are bowlers who are not consistent and when they have a bad leave, they automatically think it is the ball and grab another one and still have bad results.

I do that frequently, not because I think it's the ball but because I don't want to give that stupid thing the chance to do it again.  It's like punishment for the ball.

Alternatively, I've had nights where I simply could not feed the ball to the right.  I could throw straight, basically pulling it every shot.  I know it's bad execution (but at least consistently bad in the same way) but I have some mental block keeping me from doing it right.  So I switch to something I can throw straight with, move right, and make use of my mistakes.

Sometimes we lower average, more inconsistent bowlers do know it's us and not the ball.  If we're not good enough to fix it, the next best thing is to work with it.
