Push away Lock or not

Last night during my Friday Civic Men's League the guys on my team got into a discussion about the push away phase of the ball delivery.  The question is, at the end of your push away, do you completely lock your arm at the elbow or keep it slightly bent.  I was taught to lock your and keep it lock all the way through your release and follow through.

During a lesson w/ Mike Jasnau he told me that I shouldn't be locking my elbow on my pushaway.  Not sure if there is a difference for each person or not.  That was just my experience with my pushaway.

You should not lock your elbow during the pushaway.  Two bad things happen when you lock your elbow.  They are:

1.  You tense up the muscles in your arm.  This inhibits a free armswing.
2.  Locking the elbow stops the forward motion of the ball.

Think of your elbow as a hinge.  Your pushaway should be around 1/2 to 2/3 the way to a locked position and then let the ball drop.  Locking the elbow is no good as it prevents a relaxed armswing.

My old coach would always tell me to just bump the ball out and never to lock the elbow.

Locking the elbow stops momentum.  When momentum stops you need to restart it and that causes muscling the ball.  For some people that works out ok.  Most of the time it is a bad thing.  The second most powerful thing in the universe is gravity.  Use it if you can.
