Lane Techs, answer me a question.
« on: December 08, 2003, 06:01:05 PM »
Last night our lanes were oiled in the normal fashion, but due to some mechanical errors the machine left some stripping and lane gunk in a lane-wide line at about 45 feet or so.  The guy running the lanes wanted to just take a cloth and wipe up the mess.  The center manager told him to run the lane again.

Once we started bowling on it, we knew there was trouble.  The lane that had been run twice was just flooded - no back end, no recovery area, nothing.  Pretty much like bowling on an icy sidewalk.  The other lane in the pair was fine.  The manager insists that the machine can clean the lane before putting down the pattern.  My belief is that the machine can do the job on a burnt up pattern with a lot of carry down, but stipping a fresh shot would be difficult due to the volumes of oil involved.

So, is there any credibility to my claim that the machine would do an incomplete job stripping a fresh, unused pattern, or am I just off my nut here?

actually,
the newer lane machines are both strippers and oil sprayers.  so depending on the machine they have, it could have been ok.  then of course, if you have the machine that is just a sprayer.. you are screwed..

What kind of machine do they use? Our house runs a Kegel Kustodian that does indeed strip and oil every time. On occasion, I have re-ran a lane. After the second run, there is no more oil on the lane than what the machine is programmed to apply. It cleans very well.
Ya know, I was amazed to learn how little the amount applied actually is. What always seemed like a lot turned out to be a lot less than seemed possible. Does that make sense? LOL!

The machine, I believe, in an AMF Summit.  Part of the trouble is with the power cord that works loose as it runs and occasionally causes the machine to sputter as it runs.  Sad, considering we just got the stupid thing a few weeks ago.

All I know is that the shot on the two lanes was completely different with crazy over-under problems on the twice-run lane.  I dunno, maybe it's just me...

The Summit strips as it runs down the lane and oils both down and back depending on the program you are running. The machine is completely progamable. What happened depends on how the machine is programmed. If they have the machine set to strip on the way down it would have picked up all the oil and laid down all new. maybe it was set to just oil? But if the machine was set right it would have been a fresh shot. My guess is they were not stripping. I have seen houses that run the machine over about 40 feet only to refresh the oil and heads. Popular in some tournaments I have seen. Stripping done daily re-oiled in between shifts.

Pin, I would think any interruption of power would cause the machine to stop its program. Thus, bring it back to the foul line and start again. Then again, I dont know anything about the AMF Summit.
