I was talking to this old timer yesterday. He was telling me that this young lady that he has been bowling with on this local tournament was mad at him. Here's her beef, the old timer has been putting her in the brackets in this handicap tournament that travels to different houses every week for the summer. She has a low average, but she throws the ball very well and she tends to put some numbers up. Since its tough to beat her out the brackets with all those sticks she is getting, she has been killing the brackets. The old timer will put her in all of the brackets, and when she wins he takes back his initial investment and splits the profit with her. She feels that she should get half of everything since she is winning. This isn't right because she didn't put up any money to begin within. It's all free money to her, but she doesn't see it like that. She's not even paying for her entry fee. So now shes not speaking to my old friend.

So, on an off night, when she doesnt cash in anything, she will willingly give him back 50% of the money he put in?

She is a greedy little XXXXXX. She did not have the courage of her convictions to back herself and yet he is still sharing the winnings with her, when she is not entitled to diddly squat? I think she needs a new education in life's ups and downs. What else does she think she is entitled to??

Exactly! And on top of that he is the reason her game is improving, he comes out and works with her on her game. Some peoplehave more nerve than brains!

That sounds like a fair deal to me as long as it is agreed upon before hand. The young lady needs someone to explain to her that she has a good deal going and be thankful when she gets this free money. If she wants to invest on her own, then she can assume the risk as well.
I get mad when investors lurk around and just put money on someone without their permission. I personally only get in as many brackets as I want my name on the board. What if I am splitting brackets with a teammate and this extra bracket knocks my teammate out costing me money?
-
Lesson- always have an agreement beforehand on how proceeds are split.
General rule when I was using a backer was that they got their money back first and then everything else was split on a percentage basis. Usually the agreed percentage was I kept 60% and they got 40% with the calculations being on an event-by-event basis. Brackets, however, I could easily see being a 50-50 split...

As usual CHARLEST hit the nail on the head! I think the OLD TIMER is treating her better then she deserves. If it were me I'd stop putting her in .. no matter what profit I was making. Let her risk HER OWN money!

That's the usual split I'm familiar with also. The sponsor should always get his money back first since he/she is taking all the financial risks. It beats having people put you in (on top of what you do) sometimes and they keep ALL the money.

she really is clueless. Let's look at some #'s.
He enters her in 10 5$ Brackets= 50.
She wins two and 2nd in another= 60
Net winnings- 10
She feels she should get 30.00? He only profitted 10, He is REALLY nice to give her 50%. I only give horses a % if I make over 50.00 off of them. Then I will give them 20% of the profit. if he gave her 30 he would get 30 and ultimately lose 20.00 on the deal. YEAH, SIGN ME UP FOR THAT!!!!
Does she understand that he has to enter her upfront? And that the $$ he gets back is not all Profit, but his initial investment returned, + any profit there may be?

i have backed and been backed for 30 years. The only arrangment i have ever paticiapted in was all backing money first...then some split... I have given and got as much as 60% of profits. All the risk is taken by the backer and that risk should be covered first,

When I have had backers for tournaments or brackets the split was exactly as described. He got his investment back, then 50-50. Along these lines though. A couple years ago I was bowling a big tournament in Oklahoma and putting up my own money only got in a couple brackets. After the first round and rolling a 279, my teammates approached me about how many brackets I was in. After saying a couple they proceeded to explain I was in every bracket. Well I approached the guy running brackets and he said an old guy that hangs out had put me in the rest. He never asked if I minded, which with an agreed upon split I wouldn't, and when he won money never offered to kick back anything my way. Well, our team has never bowled that event since. Just didn't seem right to me and I had wiped out my whole team by the second game, which was in the 240's. Off subject a bit, but if you ever find yourself wanting to put someone in brackets, ask first. It is only fair.

It is so much easier to complain about things when you are not playing with your own money.
