Grind it out
« on: October 13, 2004, 07:41:02 AM »
It's amazing what can happen from week to week in league play. I'm grinding it out as best as I can in my Tuesday league house. I shot 483 last night- threw one double and had trouble getting a consistent reaction from anything in my bag. If I hit the dry too early, big flip, if I hit too much oil, didn't make the turn. Didn't matter if I played inside, outside, up the boards, swing, side turn, up the back....

My teammate shot 608 on the shot, but he was the only one tearing it up. I saw a lot of 450's, a lot of frustration, and the owner was like 'tough night out there, eh'....I am determined to find a way to do better on this shot. There's a high risk of playing outside on the first 8 boards, which is where the better carry has always been on this type of shot. If you raise your speed too much or get more side turn on the ball, you run the risk of leaving a designer split or washout. Playing inside, I think I need a more stable ball as everything I have seems to be turning too much the last 10 feet and causing a ton of 4-6 splits or single pins...

Right now I bring my Animal, Eraser Pearl Particle, Hot Wire and a spare ball. The layouts for the equipment is in my profile. I also have the El Nino Wrath and the Barbed Wire at my disposal.

What would you do on this type of grind? Would you consider moving to a urethane ball or use plastic and play deeper inside? Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

Matt

Hard to say Matt without actually bowling on it.  But it sounds like you need a less aggressive ball with a more even drilling on it.  I have an experimental ball with a 2-1/2 x 3-3/4 drilling for controlling under / over conditions.  I tried it this weekend in a tournament and it worked fairly well.  A urethane *might* work, but it could also be a little bit to early / arcing for the condition.
