Quantity discounts

Just curious - if you are purchasing a number of balls, do you think you deserve a quantity discount? Do you think you deserve a break on shipping?

Anybody?

Example:  You see a seller on eBay and all single auctions are listed with Buy it Now prices and $25 shipping.  You would like to buy a couple of different balls (say 4-8).  Would you expect a discount on shipping, or would you expect to pay $25 for each ball?

Would you expect a discount on the price of the balls?  If so, how much off the buy it now price?  Again, assuming you are ready to buy 4-8 balls.

If the seller will not give me  discount on 2 or more balls, I will just buy from someone that will.. I cannot stand all of the ebay sellers charging ridiculous amounts to ship 1 or 2 bowling balls. Its outrageous..

$25 and up for 1 ball and $43 or more for 2 balls. Thats to much..

I have almost stopped buying from ebay because of the shipping prices..

What really blows is $25 shipping on a 8lb ball.

as long as people are willing to pay those ridiculous shipping charges, they will continue..

Liek I said, I have almost stopped buying balls on ebay because of the shipping charges..

I know someone will get on here and say who cares how much shipping is as long as the total price is OK... I don't care about that.. I am not gonna pay ridiculous shipping charges, period.. Thats just me..

some of them have options, i dont

when i see shippin charges, its always 40-50 and plus the brokage fee (another 40-50) since im living in Canada

then i found bowlinball.com that asks for 69.99 for shipping and only add 19.99 for an extra ball, so i buy 3 others for my friends and at the end it only costs me about 170-180 drilled a high performance ball. rather than paying 250 or 270 for the same thing in my local pro shop.

some people just dont have the option, but yes i agree that when u have the seller close to the buyer, the seller shouldnt be greedy and ask for the extra money

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

It never hurts to ask for a discount.  A lot of EBayers, myself included, just put that flat rate on there to make it easier on ourselves and bidders.

Nobody has ever questioned my shipping rate,($20 on a ball), but if they did, I would work with them.

FYI...UPS hit me up for $17.++ on the last ball I shipped from the Midwest to the Southeast.  That is most I've paid to ship a 15# ball.

Interesting stuff.

I only asked because I asked an eBay user about a quantity discount on purchasing 8 balls.

The response was that they would give me a $5 (per ball) discount off of the advertised per ball shipping price.

Are you talking about the same ball, or different balls?  Why the he11 do you want to buy 8 of the same ball?

Either way, I guess it really depends on what you are paying, and what you are asking for.  People are in business to make money, so be realistic and let them make a profit.

The way I look at it is this:

If they are selling something at a fixed price, they have already calculated their profit into the item.  If they are listing a shipping price based on 1 item, then they have probably calculated the maximum shipping rate so they don't lose money.  So, if it costs $25 to ship across the country, they are covering themselves - it might only cost $13 to ship a few states over, and then they would be making money on the shipping.  Not a big deal because you are factoring in the shipping cost along with the fixed price to determine if that is a good deal for you.

Now, if you are going to buy 8 balls, you might expect a better deal on shipping.  Obviously it will not cost $200 ($25 x 8) to ship 8 balls - I'm using $25 because that seems to be the average cost for shipping on ebay.  Take $5 off each one and it still shouldn't cost $160 ($20 x 8) to ship those 8 balls.

Figure they will pack 4 per box and ship 2 boxes.  8 x 17 lbs (figure in some extra for the boxes, and 16lb is the heaviest ball) = 136 lbs (2 68 lb boxes).  Go to UPS/FedEx and see what they charge for those packages.

I don't think it is unreasonable to ask to pay actual shipping considering you are buying 8 balls - remember the seller has already factored in profit in their fixed selling price (of course you didn't say if the price is fixed or if you are planning on winning 8 auctions).

It's going to come down to what you feel comfortable paying and if you think it's a deal.  The only thing you can do is ask for a lower shipping rate - the worst they can say is no.

Ask Clint.  He had more Robo Rules and GP2s than the rest of the board put together.

Just cause I had 12 Robos at one time-Rev-O and Nova saw them last year at Inter City in Toledo and can vouch... (had 20+ Robos total all together), 10 GP2s at once (had 20+ of them as well all together) and last year at the Hoinke when I blew my elbow out I had 16 balls with me....14 Inertias, the Clear Spare T, and a Phenom Unleashed....doesn't mean....oh wait, yes it does mean I was a little overboard with my equipment....

Here is the point you're missing. Alot of Ebayers are selling balls at cost and upcharging the freight. Their profit isn't in the ball. It's in the freight.

It's also means lower fees for them since Ebay fees are based on the selling price, not the shipping charges. I've seen $10 items listed for 99 cents with $8.95 shipping. Some buyers think they are getting a great deal but don't look at the overall sales price.

To answer your question, yes you should get a break on shipping for purchase of multiple balls.  If they are charging $25 each, I think a discount of $5 per ball on an 8 ball purchase isn't enough.  They want to charge you $160 to ship two cases of balls?  No thanks...

Usually, a seller will jack up the shipping fees and then only charge a small amount for the auction.  Doing this avoids higher listing fees (eBay charges based on starting price), and avoids higher selling fees (eBay also charges a final value fee for auctions).  In addition, this is a good place to make up money spent on boxes, packing material, tape, printer paper, ink cartridges, eBay fees, paypal fees, etc.  Believe it or not, it can be quite expensive to sell on eBay and equipment generally only brings a fraction of the original price.  For instance, I just sold an arsenal aggressive for a teammate on eBay.  Our shop sold them for $169..and online you were looking around $100 + drilling.  This ball had a couple games tops, like brand new condition and it sold for $14.99.  After ebay and paypal fees, it netted $10.  Hardly even worth the effort of taking photos, creating an auction, answering questions/emails, packing the ball, making a trip to the UPS store, etc. etc.

So although I don't agree with paying some of these higher shipping fees, I do understand them.

I understand about the ebay fees and stuff.

I can understand paying $20 to ship a ball.  But, if I want to buy 8 of them, I just can't seem to swallow paying $120 ($15 per ball) for shipping, especially when I can see that UPS would only cost $50 to ship 8 balls.

The funny thing is that the balls are 6-7 years old, and they are blems/2nds.

I told the seller that $120 for shipping was a little more than I wanted to spend.  No response back, and the balls are still there.  No biggie.

Just to play devils advocate, it does cost $60 to ship 4 15# balls from Florida to California using UPS ground. Most Ebayers use worst case, fixed price shipping quotes and use the differnce for materials and time.

It also depends on how cheap the BIN price is. Is the guy already giving the balls away or charging top dollar?
