Time for a new ball
« on: January 14, 2009, 05:17:19 AM »
Every year around this time I purchase a new ball. I bowl only one league and about once a week I'll bowl a few games with a friend just for fun. I'm not good enough to bowl tournaments so I don't think its necessary to have an arsenal. I currently have a BWP and to be honest, I don't really like it. I want a medium oil ball for a 40 foot christmas tree pattern with medium oil. I feel overwhelmed with all the different choices out there so I need some input. I do know that I want a ball that I can control. I'm looking at the Playmaker, Pin Slasher, HyRoad, Rapid Fire, Rattler, or Grand Illusion. I can't decide. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The playmaker is awfully snappy, or at least in my case it was. I'd strongly suggest the Hy-Road, the ball is very controllable, and I haven't found anyone in my area that doesn't like it for mediums and house shots.

i throw the rapid fire now and as far a house conditions are concerned most days i dont even have to put it away and i bowl on a 5 man team.  its really predictable and finishes hard, it definately replaced my black widow as my go to ball the second i bought it. i have played every position with this ball i.e. up the gutter, ive played deep, ive played straighter up around the 3rd arrow on the right, and about 7 or 8 people throw it in my league so its pretty versitile i really like it

Can't go wrong with the HyRoad's hybrid coverstock or the Grand Illsuion's polished solid coverstock

I have thrown both the Game Breaker and the Grand Illusion, they are both good balls but given the choice between the two the Grand Illusion is the first out of my bag, very versatile ball that takes surface changes well and will allow you variety of lines.

For medium volume, medium length conditions, it's basically going to come down to what reaction shape you tend to like.

If you want a smoother, more rounded breakpoint, the Grand Illusion is a very underrated ball.  If you want something a little more angular, the Hy-Road is a fantastic piece, and very versatile.  The great thing about both of these balls is they're not very expensive and have medium RG cores, but fairly strong coverstocks that are polished out-of-the-box.  They should work well even as the lanes start to carry down and then dry out.

I would not recommend the Pin Slasher for truly medium lanes -- it's just too strong in my opinion.  However, if you are seeing a little heavier volume conditions, it's a phenomenal ball!
